i know this may be a bit of a strange question but im curious to know...

When you guys buy watches do you buy something that appeals to you right now or do you think about what you might like in the future??

For example i am a big fan of large face watches sizes 46-48mm. however when i turn 50 i am not sure if this size watch might be suitable for me. just wanted to know how you guys view this subject.

in other words what you might like today may not be appealing to you in the future.

Interesting question for me as I have never sold a watch that I didn't specifically buy to sell - if I add a watch to my collection then my intention is to keep it.

I'm not as young as some - 38, so I think that my styles have evolved fairly well and are unlikely to change radically, but having just bought a Romain Jerome at 50mm with a rusted steel case, it is hard to imagine me wearing it to a fancy restaurant to celebrate my 80th birthday :lol:

I have found that my watches go in phases - some will be worn a lot for a while and then put away because they don't appeal. Then I'll look at them one day, think about where I was in life when I acquired it and bring it back into the rotation for a while.

I guess that I am fortunate to have a selection of watches to choose from so I don't worry too much if it will get less wear at some point in the distant future.

I guess in that regard I buy for today, but certainly have the future in mind as it is never my intention to sell.

There is no guarantee that ill like anything in the future (err...or even be around). The only thing I can be sure of is what I like now.

Good point RJ!

As far as I'm concerned, I've bought lots of watches and I've also sold lots too. Of those that I've sold, I only occasionally miss one of them (the Bentley Le Mans)..... but even that's only occasionally.

As I'm getting older (I'm still in my 30's BTW), I now think I've matured in my watch appreciation to the point where watches I buy now are ones that I'm going to keep for good. I have a list of watches (less than 10, and not of the Lottery-win-only variety either) that I plan to acquire over the next few years, and those are keepers without a doubt. All of them are what I consider to be classics (for one reason or another) in their own right, so I have no doubt that those are watches that I will have no reason to fall out of love with.

I have not yet bought a watch hoping I'll like it in the future. If I don't like it now, I won't wear it, and then I don't see the point in having it in the watchbox. Also, if I would stop liking any of the watches I have now, for one reason or another, they'll go to another owner. I'm quite likely to take a hit on the cost, but then again I've had the pleasure of wearing them.

Actually, I have two or three Breitlings I'll move when I get the chance. I still like them, but I've started to like the idea of a more diversified watchbox even more. Sure, I could just add other brands, but in order to have a balance a few Breitlings should go. The drawback is that the boxes and papers are stored in Sweden where I don't live, so it has to wait till the day I move back.

I bought the watches I have because I liked them at the time, but I also saw myself wearing them for a long time. I have no plans to sell either of my watches.

I also buy watches that appeal to me now and, as an extension of this, will hopefully also like in the future. I don't buy watches thinking that I might like them later.

I also don't generally sell watches that I buy but put thought into the purchase before riding the emotion of the moment. However if a ever lose my connection with a watch, then it goes.
