I like those watches with those oversized crown guards. But honestely they ae more of a gimick to me than anything else. I don't see myself plopping down the kind of cash they demand. |

wow that is a whole lot of crown guard, looks interesting, but that could not be comfortable on the wrist. |

That crown guard is too much for me. Actually, the crown guard originally is nothing of a gimmick at all, but very essential to the water resistance when Panerai introduced it... |

If I remember right, it was Cartier, who made the first watch with crown guard, the "Sheik". That was somewhen in the 1930ies, because the watch had to be waterproof, and there was no other way to guarante that. With nowadays technologies, a crownguard like that looks rather rediculous to my eyes. It might be somewhat usefull for a divers watch, like a panerai, but that thing does not even state waterproofness and is in a pilotswatch design. Who needs a crownguard like that for a pilots watch? If You invest in a watch with special features, those should have at least some practical use. Buying this watch is like buying a smart with bullfangs. BG Thomas |

I personally really like Graham watches (see one of my earlier posts on here), but that particular one isn't one of my favourites. (And yeah, I agree with Thomas that they are over-priced). However the "crown guard" on these isn't first and foremost a crown guard at all. Apparently (and I am choking a little on the marketing spin here!  ) it's all to do with being able to activate the chronograph function with the thumb of your right hand, as the thumb (ALLEGEDLY!) has a slightly faster response time than your fingers, hence more accutracy!  Make of that what you will!

Well personally I think it's a really good idea to include a bottle opener in a crown guard - never know when it'll be useful. Wonder if you can buy the bottle opener without the watch attached? |
