Just came across this rather fantastic looking piece -

http://www.elitetraveler.com/news_detai ... ajkull-dna

Like the Moon and Titanic DNA pieces before it, this one of a kind watch uses real rock and ash from the Icelandic Eyjafjallajokull volcano that brought the skies above Blighty and the rest of northern Europe to a total standstill.

Personally, I think it looks FANTASTIC! Just a shame it's a one off and not a run.

That is very cool!

I still want a Romain Jerome piece, they took a back seat for me after they went through some very tough financial times - it was looking like they may go bankrupt and I didn't want to have paid money for a watch that never got made. They have gone through a major executive shake up and I'm starting to look at them again - the Moon Dust series still intrigues me, though I'm starting to wonder what's next.

Would love to see something like this expanded into a range - fantastic looking piece.

Reading your words, I can't help but think that all the crazy stuff they put in their watches has got to be expensive. The Titanic? Moon dust? You hear me?

I agree, very powerful. Good-looking watch!

Peace

I'm sure that it adds to the price, but they are buying one piece and then splitting it across a lot of watches so cost per unit is substantially reduced. The biggest problem with RJ was bad management, and combine that with a bad economy, a decision to use BNB Concept for their tourbillons (BNB went bankrupt last year) and a huge investment in marketing watches that didn't yet exist in production volumes and you have a big problem.

One of their ADs asked me for a $10,000 deposit on a watch with 8 month delivery, I thought at first the AD was pushing their luck, but maybe it was RJ.

Interesting information Roff.

That is one cool looking watch Driver. Unique which is good; you wouldn't be too worried about running into someone who was also wearing one.

What would the cost for something like that be?

Wow, that looks amazing! Great looking watch and I usually dont like designs that are really out there, but that is supremely cool!

I still would not actually buy one, still have the feeling it is something of a gimmick, give me an AP, IWC, and a Patek for the price of one of those any day. Then again I am probably not their target audience

Roff, i thought BNB an Concepto were two different companies because as far as I knew Concepto were still going. Maybe I was wrong. I thought that BNB made their Tourbillons and Concepto made their non-complicated movements....

@Tim - yes the uniqueness is great but that pushes the price up even more. I'm guessing it probably costs the same as a brand new Rolls Royce!

@Altair - I think you are right about target audience - for me these are for people who already have vast collections of "normal" watches and are looking for something a little more "out there". (although with your collection and speed of purchasing Altair I think its only a matter of time till we see you with one! ). I bet there is no-one in the entire world that owns an RJ as their only watch.

Correct on all counts.

The only piece that you are missing is that BNB's full name is BNB Concept. Nothing to do with Concepto who are still going strong (or at least going). I didn't mean to imply that their 'normal' movements weren't available, just that the watches weren't available when they were trying to market them and that the high end pieces that finance the regular watches weren't available at all.

It all added up to a cash flow issue.

Oops, I naturally just read it as Concepto instead of Concept.

Has the watch even been made yet - or is this just a mock up?

Looks very cool - but the real deal in person isn't going to glow like that surely? lol

How do they plan to give the watch the same effect?

I might be missing something - volcanic rock doesn't burn/glow forever does it? :D

I suspect that it is just an effect to make it appear molten.
