Thinking about getting the next watch that is 'made in America'. Does anybody have a favorite company to talk about?

Hamilton was actually sold to a Swiss company many years ago. The only one I can find is RGM

A vintage Timex could be fun. They are made of tin, bubble gum wrappers, and paperclips but they're made in the USA!

Yes they are an American company, and that was the first that sprang to my mind too.

The problem with Kobold though is the price. Lots of very generic movements for fairly big bucks. They also do a few with what they claim to be in-house movements, although I think they've misunderstood what in-house means in the horological world, as their "in-house" movements are actually old German movements from the 1960's that they have (admitedly, extensively) reworked with American components.

That said, they make some very distinctive watches, but I just wouldn't pay the asking price for one personally.

RGM are simply incredible. Great company to deal with and Roland is more than happy to do custom work if you want something really special. He also now has his own in house movement - if he were Swiss prices would be twice as high.

My Kobold says "Pittsburgh PA" on the caseback, but the movement is Swiss.

Anyhow, I really like Kobolds but, as D8 says, the asking price is a real issue if you want to buy new. Second-hand they're more reasonable.

If you really want an all american made wristwatch, you need to look at vintage Hamiltons. They made some of the best and most reliable watches. You can even buy a gold one for a reasonable price. Another great vintage wristwatch is the Elgin Railroad grade chronometer wristwatch, the B W Raymond. The first three of their models used an american made 23 jewel movement. It was the first and last American made railroad approved wristwatch. They easily keep chronometer time and are attractive as well. Look on Ebay for B W Raymond wrist watch and occaisonally you will find them. A good quality one will cost about $250. When I get to it , I will post a picture of mine.
If you want a pocket watch, the very best ones are in fact, American made. Hamilton made what is considered the best and its model 950 , 950E, and 950B were the best. They had gold trains among other high grade features. When properly adjusted they keep near perfect time. Mine is an early model 950 made around 1918. A true pocket chronometer and beautiful to behold.

These guys are ADs for them as well with some ideas - http://www.watchseller.com/rgmwatches.html

Their in house movement piece is around $8,000 from memory.

Thanks all for the great info... For sure, will check out RGM for the next purchase. Those vintage Hamiltons are nice. More inclined to support a current watchmaker though.
