What with being underwhelmed by this years Basel, I decided to go after a few old favorites. I found an excellent deal on a grail of mine, the IWC Portuguese Perpetual Calendar:

A truely fantastic watch, with a magnificent movement and excellent case finishing. The dial is a bit busy but still a work of art!

On the other hand, I can pick up a Royal Oak Safari:

AND a UN Chronometer 43 for the same price!

hmmm, what to do? Get the once in a life time oportunity at a very high end ultra exclusive watch or my two other obsessions at the moment? I am sure I would love both the Safari and the UN, but the IWC is a truely devine piece with unbelievable movement.

What do you guys think? I am leaning toward the Safari-Chronometer combo.

I love the iwc perpetuals and let's be honest even at full rrp they are alot better value for money than any perpetual breitling release

I am with Alex**, the IWC perpetual is my biggest, achievable, grail. tI just captures for me what a true finely complicated swiss timepiece is. That is where I would splurge. :strummin:

IWC perpetual calendar all the way. Personally I'd probably go for the extremely limited Big Pilot version with that movement, but either way I'd take that any day of the week over the AP and UN. While it IS a lot of cash that IWC perpetual calendar movement is actually superb value for money.

While the UN Chronometer is a nice watch how could you go past:

:D
But the watch isn't going anywhere and if your other two obsessions are calling you more now...

Tough situation Altair, I feel for you :D

Yeah it's a no brainer for me too. IWC every day of the week.

Great watch by the way!

Damn it you guys are not helping my case at all!! My brain keeps pushing me towards the IWC PC as it is the logical choice, but I am lusting after the other two.

Visually, both the AP Safari and UN Chronometer look many times better than the IWC and would get much more wrist time, however the IWC PC is an unbelievable value at 16.500 for a watch of that magnitude, complexity, finish, and exclusivity (and solid gold!) but I am not sure I will have the same smile when it is on the wrist as I do when I flip it over. The dial is just too busy.

ARGHHHH!

Well look, the only point of owning a watch is to wear and enjoy it. If the IWC is going to be a safe queen then there's no point - for me it is by far the nicest watch of the three, but if for you it's not something that you would wear even if you like it then what's the point?

$16,500 for something that you never wear isn't a bargain, and let's face it, even at that price you are going to lose a ton of money on resale.

You are making allot of sense there Roff, I was entertaining the notion of the IWC as it would scratch both my Perpetual Calendar and Porteguese itches. Thing is there are many other models of both that I like better.

I guess I just needed to "hear" it out loud. Anyone interested in an IWC PC let me know, excellent value at 16.500.

One thing Roff, you say that it will lose allot on resale, if it has a retail value of 32000 I would think most of the damage was done at this point, cant imagine one going for sale on anything less than 15000.

Driver, I have to say I quite dislike the Big Pilot PC, and actually preffer the regular model! I guess thats what makes watch collecting so fun though!

You should be right, and maybe in another year or so you will be, but gold watch prices are seriously depressed right now - I've seen LE gold Navitimer range watches for not much more than $6,000 used, and look at the problem that you are having with your TT Chronomat.

Well I guess ill be the first to go against the grain here... Wrist time is what its all about! A Safari is just plain awesome. Wait...AND a UN on top of it?!?! Easy choice for me :!: :!: :!: :!:

IWC was my immediate reaction. But... when I really think about it, I could certainly imagine getting much more wrist time out of the Safari and the UN.
