Post subject:  Automatic watch winder box recommendations
Afternoon,

I've just purchased a Navitimer (in addition to my much loved Chrono Colt Quartz) and am looking for recommendations for self wind box things to keep the Navitimer going.

I travel quite a bit and don't want to carry both with me and on the occassions I decide to leave the Navitimer at home I want something to keep it going. I've heard if they stop it is real pain in the ass to get going again.

I don't want to get the cheapest thing on the market, but then I'm not looking for the Frank Muller of automatic watch winders either!

There are several great watch winders on the market, and you won't have to take out a second mortgage to afford one!

After trying two different winders by other more expensive brands, I now use a 6-way winder by these guys -

No problems with it and it doesn't break the bank..... provided you buy from eBay and not the actual site! :wink:

wow I love that Official Time company. Makes me want to buy one even though I don't have an automatic right now. And thats makes me want to buy an automatic watch.

I have to say I've been very impressed with mine. I've got the 6-way in Silver-grey. Ebay prices for brand new items are way better than buying direct. I think I picked mine up for about $450 which is fantastic value really.

I hope you regulars will forgive a stupid question from a newbie but do these watchwinders make much noise? My wife's a really light sleeper so if they hum or buzz or whatever, she's bound to complain!

OK, so I took delivery of the Landmark today and was reading the instructions (who knew a box could be so complex!) and it says to figure out which direction mine needs to be wound it'd have to be powered down. I'm going away for the weekend tomorrow and would like to leave the Navitimer in the box but don't have time to let it run out of juice.

Anyone with one of these boxes know if a Navitimer winds clockwise, anti-clock wise or alternates? If I'm not sure I'm tempted just put it on alternating to get a bit of both. Thanks :) Will post this in the Breitling discussion forum too.

It is near silent with the lid shut. Only when you put your ear right beside (about an inch away!) can you even hear it.

I've used watch-winders for a number of years and to be honest I always use the alternating program irrespective of the movement. After all, when you wear a watch on your wrist it will be subject to random motion, so in my opinion it makes sense to use to the winder in the most random movement setting available. Sure if a certain movement only winds clockwise then for part of an alternating cycle it won't be being wound, but that doesn't bother me. What I CAN say is that I've never had a problem with any watches not being wound when placed in my winder.

My initial instinct was to play safe and try this, it seems the most logical. I've since found the Navitimer winds clockwise. :)

For future reference, Orbita keeps a database of watches - which way they wind, and how many turns per day are necessary to keep them wound: http://www.orbita.net/pages/17100.htm.

Orbita makes great winders, I have 3 of them for my watches. A couple are a little noisy, the only truly silent winder that I have owned is the Sharper Image. Too bad it's been discontinued, you may find some for sale on Ebay or in Sharper Image's closeout section.
