To be as civil as possible, I was merely getting to the fact that you wouldn't talk to me like that in person...trust me when I tell u this! :D Once again acting tough!!! I deal with people like you all the time and it's amazing how one will cower when it's one on one!! Just my 2 cents!! :D

This is vaguely threatening statement and nowhere near civil.

Not really sure why your response is warrented. I don't feel anyone was disrepectful. Strong opinions were expressed, but that doesn't mean confrontation is necessary.

There any interest in devising a way to dig a little deeper into this subject?

I would love to see something tried, but not sure how practical it is. To be scientifically significant I am assuming that we would need some kind of controlled conditions to ensure like for like comparisons and then test all the variables - different watches, different types of cell phone (those with speakerphones / those with only in ear speakers; modern vs. older; etc), different exposure times, different distances from the cell phone, it just seems to go on and on.

We also have to eliminate all other sources of potential magnetic interference.

As a first step is there any readily available and cost effective tool to measure the strength of magnetic fields that people can use around cell phones?

Any electrical engineers on hand? I could give it a swing but my head's been in a chemistry book for the last 7 years.....

I could dust off the old bread board and give it a shot!

I still think first test should take 2 watches of the same type, a video camera and a cell phone. A faraday cage would be nice to limit external magnetism sources, but not required.

Take two cheap autos like Invictas. Set them up somewhere and let them run for a week and take regular videos/photos of them at the same time every day(or a time lapse set up would be nice, some digital cameras can take time lapse shots and turn them into movies). See how well they are running.

Then do the same for a week with one of the watches sitting on a phone. Take more video/photos. See if there is any change.

There are dozens of other variables of course, but this would tell you if you are on the right track or not. As I said before, I'd be willing to kick in a little cash to check this out.

Faraday cages cannot block static and slowly varying magnetic fields, such as Earth's magnetic field or the magnetic field produced by the magnet contained in a speaker (a compass will still work inside). A faraday cage is designed to shield against external electric fields or to a degree external electromagnetic radiation (ie radio waves), very different. It it most often used to protect electric equipment from damage resulting fro lightning strikes.

You would need to buy a gauss meter to measure the magenetic field intensity, they are not expensive.

I know it's an old thread, but I saw something today and I decided to toss a little more anecdotal evidence into the debate.

Image

This is my Blackberry 8900 and there is a magnet housed in the back for the speakerphone. It's strong enough to hold 4 paperclips.

Found this out by mistake. I put my phone on top one my girlfriend's Bobby pins and when I picked it up the Bobby pin came with.

I'd keep my watch away from that

Wow 4 paperclips is a lot! Interesting.

My recollection is that blackberries have some sort of magnetic switch so they'll autolock when they are put back in their holster.

That's true. I don't have one but that might explain the relative strength.

Despite having recently read this thread and being aware of the context, upon reading this, I spent a couple seconds thinking, "What the hell is this guy talking about, berries with a magnetic switch?"

UH..Never thought about that little thing in BB's that make them autolock/sleep when going in their holsters. I know the case has a magnet in them but the phones too? I guess that makes sense.
