I haven't been to an AD in such a long time, but I've always (for some reason) thought that watches were huge, like they would really have a presence on your wrist, speaking of 43 mm and up. I guess I have been looking at too many pictures from the manufacturers, as they enlarge the photos quite a bit! I did go to Costco the other day and after walking by the jewelry section, I knew I had to go back since there must've been some watches, which there were. I saw a Navitimer, not sure which one as I was distracted by the Chopards, and it was quite large, and what I expected of most watches, however, when I saw, I think it was some type of Colt (I forget), it looked TINY! I could barely read anything on the watch. I also saw a Chopard 1000 miglia, one that I had been quite interested in, and it was about 40.something mm. I couldn't read anything on it. Yes, it was in a case and maybe 6 inches away, but still, all the fine lines were a blur!

I actually have two questions:

Does a couple mm in size difference make that big of a difference?

and

How often do you guys read your watches down to the minute details, cause it seems like, for most watches, you'd really have to squint to read half the stuff.

I have a 48mm dial on my Super Avenger, with the airforce Blue dial With Silver subs it does get a bit confusing at certain positions during the time sequence as the white hands clash with the white dials..........but as far as it being too small a dial, far form it, its fantastic.
Have a look at an SA and if it is too small.....you should have gone to Specsavers.

Sitting here looking at my 'tiny' (42mm) Complications 19 and am reading the time, chrono, day, date, month and moonphase without any trouble.

Well there's the problem right there for me. Just when I get to the point in my life I can actually stop for a bit, smell the roses and look around at all the beauty in the world - I can't freaking see it without corrective lenses!!!
I think the watch companies should offer corrective crystals as an option.

But seriously I agree, it's all about getting accustomed to a certain watch. Once you get used to a watch, no matter the size, it's easy to read it.

I think it is all about contrast .I can tell the time on my Luminox easily because of the black dial with white hands and numbers . My Tag Heuer with silver dial , hands and batons is nearly impossible to see unless I move my wrist to reflect light off the hands . I now always buy watches with contrasting hands and dials .

I feel strange reading this -- am I the only one who wear my watch primarily as fashion accessory, and look at my iPhone if I needed the time???

To clear up any confusion.....I meant that manufacturers make the pictures of their watches, whether on their sites or in catalogs, much bigger than the actual size, so you can see the small details. What were you going to say...?

Watches always look smaller to me in person than in pics. They appear larger than life on the web or in print, only to end up looking completely different in the flesh. As far as telling time to the down to the minute goes...its pretty easy. Even if the watch only had 5 minute markers, it would be pretty easy to get the correct minute. I guess its just something that you get used to.

It's something you get used it. Even with a busy dial, such as with a navitimer, you can quite easily see details with a little practise.

Ya, I would think that it'd be easy to read the watch down to the minute. What I meant was, which I should have cleared up earlier, reading the smaller things such as a chronograph, or the seconds.

Shouldn't be a problem with 15 year old eyes.

Hi All!

Initially I had trouble reading the sub-dials in my new (pre-owned) 1461/52 but it is a matter of getting use to - as it has been stated in this thread. However, I still can not see the weeks as clearly as I would like unless it happens to be on the actual number. Maybe I need corrective lenses - the thought has crossed my mind - but only after I got the said watch - LMAO -
