Something quite different, but someone might find it interesting. This is a lead Sundial I found with a metal detector this Fall, it's over 200 years old. (could be 250+) I'm thinking it would look good with a black croc strap, but decided to stick with my Blackbird for now.

Very cool. How did you arrive at the date of 200-250 years? Is there some reference source for these?

The date is based on everything else that was found including mid. 18th century Acadian bale seals, Spanish silver coins (1726 & 1737), Georgian era copper coins, and various other items. The newest we seen there dated about 1812. The site was over two fields and was a combination or early French, British, and Loyalist, so it's hard to date a misc. find like this.

PS.... The most I've been told is that it may have been considered a toy. I've not looked any further because there is no question it's old, and I'm not sure how much else there would be to find out.

I see. I do a little metal detecting myself but have never found anything remotely as nice as this piece. Congratulations and thanks for the info.

It was definitely something different. I've detected for ten years now and have found lots of cool things at the old settlements. I do it for many other reasons than to find something valuable, but if that happens it not such a bad thing. Below is what I bought with the money from a rare token I found this Fall.

Usually I keep what I find, and would have done so in this case too except there was condition issues and I wouldn't have felt good about hanging on to it year after year. Plus the offer was very good and what better way to remember it by than to buy a watch to keep for good.

They work but it's all about location. (You can't find it if it's not there) My main interest is early military and Colonial coins so I'm not one of the people who is being made fun of at the beach. In a way it's like watches, some people just have the DNA and only a matter of circumstance to get them involved. I have always liked watches, but just owned one, and nothing that was over maybe $700. But a few years ago I met someone through metal detecting that was really into them and for some reason this past May got me looking to see what was out there and Breitling seemed to be what suited my taste. I do think it's kinda neat how both came together with a find paying for my second ling. Anyway, for obvious reasons I usually keep my posts to the appropriate type of forums but thought the sundial was kind of neat.

I took the picture a couple of months ago to mark my ten years. For anyone who lives on the east coast it is out there. It won't make you rich but sure is a great way to get out of the house and get some exercise.
