Post subject:  Are there any Alpina or Sothis Owner's out there?

After buying my first Breitling in 2007 (Super Ocean Steelfish) I have become more and more obsessed with watches!!! I think that is a common "problem"...the good thing is that my wife doesn't mind, and is encouraging my new "hobby"

I just got the 2007 Wristwatch Annual and now I've got more watches to look at than I can handle. I've got my eye on a couple (along with a SA).

1) Alpina Avalanche Extreme Regulator - 48mm - I like this one a lot, mostly as a more casual addition to the collection. It's got the "big" factor I like...

2) Sothis Horus - 44mm - This will take a little more saving, and would add some "elegance" to the collection...Is that weird to say? haha...Also it is limited to 200 pieces in each color.

Does anyone own either of these, or have any experience with either company? Any advice/assistance is appreciated...I'm basically talking out loud here!

I like the second one. Very interesting. Sorry no brand info from me though.

Don't have practical experience with either, but know a little about the reputation of Sothis. Best way to sum it up is that if it had a more famous name it would sell for a lot more, and sell well.

Very high quality parts and well put together. Watch is almost exclusively German with modified Swiss movements, and while the look is probably going to put some people off it is certainly unique (and personally to my taste). I personally prefer the black Horus of the two options because of the contrast, though it's not my favourite model - I like the Osiris.

If I had to have a criticism, I don't like the logo - the font looks almost 'childish'.

Thanks for the thoughts! I'm going to look at the Alpina this weekend...I don't know of any Sothis AD's in Chicago. Since the Sothis is a limited edition I am more intrigued...if they do catch on that could be a really good investment...

Quite nice and different watches. The Alpina is not really to my taste, but like the others who have replied, the Sothis is pretty cool. I don't know much about the company personally, but I'd own one although I don't think I'd fancy paying full retail for it. That's quite a lot of cash for a relatively unknown make.

I just agree with you guys. The Alpina is not my cup of watch, I think the dial is too messy (this type of dials have never got me going...) but I like the Sothis. A bit different, but still classy and elegant.

Thanks for the comments...The Sothis caught my eye first because it is actually featured on the Cover of the Wristwatch Annual. Maybe it won't be an "unknown" for long?

Off the top of my head I can't give company history, but I do not believe it is a "new" company...I can get more information from the book for anyone interested.

Early to mid 90s if I remember correctly.

After (too) many German beers tonight I finally looked it up. Looks like Sothis is a young company (1996). I was thinking of Alpina, which was established in 1896. Nothing like 12 Warsteiner's to make you realize you were off by 100 years!!

I should drink during the day more...haha...

I tried on the Alpine extreme regulator when i was in the Carribean... the watch did not sit right on my wrists.. the lugs stuck out alot and there was a lot of space, with both the bracelet and the rubber strap. The lug design was not done very well on that watch, and it looks kind of cheap on the wrist.
