Left work for an hour this morning, to pick up my Milgauss. It was a long weekend without it, as I thought that I would be able to get it on Friday last. For some reason, the GV (with the green sapphire crystal), was back in the display case. I am glad, because it really made me very happy that I had chosen the black dial with plain crystal. These are a few shots I just took - such as they are - and the last one is courtesy of Larry at Rolexforums. It is the best shot I have seen yet of the model I have. Unfortunately, my shots make the case look almost gold. I am sorry for the poor quality of my pics. The wrist shots will mostly have to wait until the weekend, and I can get my buddy to take them with his iPhone. We seem to have remarkable success with the simple camera in that phone! At least these are now my own shots, though, and not "borrowed", so they are more personal:
This is one watch that is just so beautiful in it's simplicity. To me, it just sparkles with good taste, with a touch of the unusual. That being the unusual lightning bolt second hand, the orange "Milgauss" and the small orange markers. For me, one of the biggest bonuses is that it has no calendar, so the dial is a symmetrical and clean as it can be. The applied silver Rolex emblem at 12 o'clock is a nice touch as well.
There is a small Milgauss booklet that comes along with the watch, among other things a short description of the movement, noting a couple of small details that I was not aware of:
"The 3131 Movement. To yet further improve the resistance of the Milgauss to magnetic interference, the movement is equipped with a blue PARACHROM hairspring which, in addition fo being completely insensitive to magnetic fields, is much more shock resistant. A new lubricant was also synthesised to optimise the escapement function. The escape wheel is made from an innovative paramagnetic material."
I was aware of the hairspring, but not the other details. An inhouse movement, specially for the Milgauss.
I never dreamed I would own such a piece! Not only that, it is beautiful as well. The polished centre links are gorgeous. The crown and the winding and changing time functions, and the tightening, are the smoothest I have known. The Easylink bracelet allows you to lengthen the watch about 5mm when your wrist swells. I love the stainless bracelet on my Omega AT, but I honestly think this Oyster bracelet with Oyster clasp goes even a step beyond. The watch is heavy, and quite thick. The movement is protected my a magnetic shield (I believe called Faraday Cage) mounted inside the Oyster case.
This whole watch is beyond my expectations. It wears beautifully. At first, I thought the 40mm case would be a bit too large, but it wears quite a bit smaller than my Omega AT at 41.5mm.
Truly a remarkable watch! Whenever I gaze at it, I will think of all these things. I feel very fortunate indeed to own such a work of art.
