This was great news to me today, as I read the post on Watchtalkforums. A Limited Edition Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean of 1948 pieces, to be introduced next year. I did a Google search, and there is quite a bit of info about it already. Here is a bit more info from the net: " An interesting new Seamaster Professional Planet Ocean watch is in the offing from Omega. According to preliminary sources, the timepiece features a bezel in which the graduated ring is crafted from a newly formulated ceramic-metal hybrid material described as “Liquidmetal”. Apparently composed of titanium, copper, nickel and beryllium in addition to significant amounts of zirconium oxide, Omega’s Liquidmetal bezel promises to have a very attractive and rich appearance, combined with superior shatterproof qualities and excellent resistance to environmental factors–superior traits indeed for a timepiece that is both a luxury object, and an instrument with true capabilities for diving and sports use. " " The Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Liquidmetal timepiece will be a limited edition of 1,948 pieces, that number being a nod to year in which the first Omega Seamaster made its debut. " The Liquidmetal ( registered trademark ) alloy is an amorphous metal - a metallic material with a disordered, non-crystalline atomic structure. Its' fusion temperature is half that of conventional titanium alloys but when it is cooled, its' hardness is three times as great as that of stainless steel. The amorphous structure allows it to bond seamlessly with the ceramic bezel." "The alloy consists of five elements - zirconium, titanium, copper, nickel and beryllium. A bulk metallic glass can, by virtue of its' low critical cooling rate be formed into a structure with a thickness of more than a tenth of a millimetre. Zirconium is an important constituent of the alloy and of the ceramic material which is made of zirconium oxide. The final, perfectly smooth bezel is particularly resistant to scratching and corrosion because of the hardness of the components." ![]() ![]() ![]() Can't wait for this one to come out! I think that I will be doing some serious saving until this rolls out next year. Cheers, Carl |

I dont mean to oversimplify, but is it just a regular PO with a new bezel? |

Looks like it has a ceramic dial, too. Are there other POs have that? --M |

After reading that great press release about the various types of metal in it etc, I was actually really disappointed when I got to the picture and it turned out to be black! ![]() Shame it's the "dinky" 42mm model too. (But I do think the PO is a handsome looking beast). |

Quote: Any idea on price yet? An AD quoted $6,800Btw, contrary to what I first thought on reading the press release, Liquidmetal is not Omega's invention. It's made by a company in California and has already been used on mobile phones, golf clubs, cuff links, flash drives... |

Interesting, I thought that they were quite taken with the sapphire bezel approach that they use on the PloProf and that sister company Blancpain use on the Fifty Fathoms. I guess they aren't completely satisfied with that if they are looking at other options. |

Good-looking watch! But, based on these pics, probably not different enough to persuade me to upgrade from my current Planet Ocean and pay the premium. Reminds me a bit of that enamel-dial LE Speedy: beautiful, yes, and certainly an improvement on the standard model, but I would baulk at paying twice as much for it. |

If I remember correctly, there are a few articles that say the Liquidmetal is not Omega's invention. I guess there are a few subtle differences in the Liquidmetal from the regular Planet Ocean. The markers on the dial are applied, but I don't think they are on the regular model. I love the way the bezel and dial seem to "match, but not sure if the dial is actually ceramic as well. So hard to tell from just photos, albeit excellent quality ones. I think the number font is a wee bit different too. Personally, I am glad they kept the watch to 42mm, with the tendency I have lately to smaller watches. I guess that size would appeal to a majority, I think it's large enough to look good on a large wrist, but not too big to be out of place on a smaller wrist. But then, we all have different tastes. My 41.5mm Aqua Terra seems a bit large now - but still comfortable - but that's because my other two are 36mm. Call me boring, but I am very pleased that they are doing the watch in silver and black. I guess they could change all that on later models, if this is a success. I don't know much about Limited Editions, other than I bought my AS Blacksteel because I happened to be at my AD at the right time. However, does anyone know if a model like this can be pre-ordered? I know that this is one watch that will suit me to a tee. Similar or not to a regular Planet Ocean, I would probably pay the premium to have such an outstanding limited edition model. If it is $6800USD, I wonder what the amount would be up here in Canada...eh? I am speculating about $8500.CAD. The Aqua Terra 8500 ss is $4500usd and $5600Cad, or almost exactly 25% more, in spite of the fact that the US Dollar is worth only about 5-6% more. Well, time will tell. Maybe I am getting ahead of myself, but I am passionate about this watch even before it comes out! Cheers, Carl |

carlhaluss wrote: The markers on the dial are applied, but I don't think they are on the regular model. Nope, they're applied on the regular model too. If paying the premium doesn't put you off, it's probably worth enquiring whether you can pre-order. As far as I know, you generally can pre-order with these sorts of things (PloProf might have been an exception), but it could be a bit early at this stage. Being an LE will certainly help with value retention - from what I've seen there seems to be strong demand for the Quantum of Solace LE Planet Ocean, which I'm sure would have much more limited appeal than this. The enamel dial Speedy I mentioned earlier was about twice the price of a regular Speedy (although it does have a different movement). |

Doesn't the enamel dial speedmaster also have a 44.25mm case as well? |
