This is without a doubt the best explanatory video of how a mechanical watch works that I've ever seen!

Don't be put off by the 1950's US TV presenter voiceover man! It's an excellent video and takes a lot of mystery out of how these little mechanical marvels basically work.

Very good find!

It misses out a few bits around the setting and regulating, but a very good explanation of how the running train transmits the power.

Spectacular! That really does help me understand how a watch works.
Thanks D8.

Great find, Driver!

FYI, here is a web-site where you can download these types of videos and it's a great FREE resource for a number of interests you may have - this video is particularly interesting as well.

http://www.archive.org/details/HowaWatc1949

The download function is to the left of the video and you can decide which quality you'd like to download for your iPod, Zune, whatever :)

Thanks for the post!

Archive.org is amazing!

I have saved a fortune on watchmaking related books through that site.

What amazes me is the number of people who sell CDs of archive.org books on eBay!!!

That was great! I finally have an idea of whats inside a mechanical watch and a vague understanding of how it works.

I love this forum :lingsrock:

That video is awesome! Could anyone offer a suggestion on the best book on watchmaking with lots of photos and discussions of the various complications including perpetual calendars moon phases, etc. Thanks in advance!

Do you want technical maintenance or consumer level explanation of function?

Honestly the web is one of the better sources for some of that stuff, and I tried to consolidate some of the information a few years ago - to suspend my already questionable humility for a minute there are links on this page if you scroll down - http://www.breitlingsource.com/articles.shtml

From a technical standpoint there are a lot of old correspondence courses available dirt cheap in digital format on eBay - Chicago and Bulova schools are among the better ones.

Thanks. I did read your articles which were also awesome! Probably both levels but consumer level for starters I will check out the correspondence schools you recommended. Thanks again Professor!

Try George Daniel's book 'Watchmaking' as well. Not the cheapest, and can be hard to find but it was reprinted a couple of years back so easier to find than it used to be.
