Post subject:  Never using a watch - life time?

I was wondering, if I bought an automatic watch today and never used it for 20 years, would it be ready to work when I wear it 20 years later? I'm assuming yes, but I'd like to make sure. I know there are some watches that I really love, but I doubt they'd be around 20 years from now. So if I bought one today (not going to, of course, just an example), would it work in 20 years?

If it wouldnt be used for 20 years I would assume it would need a service as the lubricants would break down, but thats my opinion.

No, that's fact!

The oils will break down long before 20 years have gone by and the watch will definitely need servicing. Depending on how the oils settle running it with old oil could be worse than running it with no oil.

why would you want to buy a watch and keep it in a draw untouched for 20 years?

Why would you do something like that?
Even if you don't wear it, you definitely shouldn't just bury it in a drawer. :nono:
Keep the watch on a watchwinder, and have it serviced at regular intervals (say, 5 years).

Why would I do that?

Because I'm 14 years old and some watches are absolutely amazing, but they don't suit me due to my youth. It's that simple. Like if I had 40k right now, I'd buy my favortie watch even if I didnt wear it cause I know that day would come in the future

I wish I had your vision when I was 14. I didn't know a good watch from a hole in the ground. Start collecting now!

I'll post of a picture of my grandfather's automatic watch that was not serviced and sat in a jewelry box for 30 years.

Well this one sat in a drawer for 40 years or so - viewtopic.php?f=11&t=11566

And I have a few things that I suspect sat in drawers for a heck of a lot longer than that.
