I was filling out some insurance paperwork and realized how silly the model names of watches are. "Steelfish"? "Avenger"? "Maxi Marine Diver"? Who comes up with this stuff? 13 year old boys who read too many comic books? Or is it a result of French->English translation?

Or is it because they want to appeal to 40 year old boys who read too many comic books? :D

I guess it's better and just a little more cool in marketing terms than having watches called the Breitling "Kevin", or the Omega "Potato" or something.

Panerai seems to do ok with just numbers. But I hear your point. Cars have goofy names for that matter.

I'm personally not a big fan of just model numbers. Unless you're really into a specific range of watches, numbers are much more of a pain to associate to whichever watch. For example, when you hear PAM270, PAM275, PAM268, etc, it's harder to remember which watch it relates to compared to when you hear Breitling Navitimer, or Seawolf, or Avenger. People will associate the image to a name far more readily than to a number.

In fact that's how they teach you to remember playing cards or any other string of numbers : they say you should assign a name or an object to them and then have the names interact in some kind story. Basically words/names are much easier to remember than numbers.

I think that giving the watches "goofy" names is also a marketing strategy. I mean, it would be easier to remember than just a bunch of numbers. Also, it makes it more catchy and sound intriguing. Sometimes, the names are also descriptions of their functions although it seems exaggerated at times.
