Yup, the lure of the green box has finally hit me. I've started looking at, and admiring subs, GMT's and the all mighty DSSD. Problem is that I am so used to getting exceptional watches for under $3k, and to purchase the DSSD I'll need to say goodbye to at least 2, maybe 3 of my faves. Already gone is the Sinn 757 UTC, and next would be the SOHC and likely the POC. It it stupid to sell three great watches like these for one Rolex?

It would be worth it, but not for a Rolex. So many other more interesting watches in that price range.

Agreed.

In one way I can understand you - been through those thoughts and even bought one. Although, when I got home I wasn't thinking "what a great piece I'm wearing" but rather "is it really worth all that money". My AD was luckily willing to reverse the deal.

I dont think the DSSD is worth the asking. Now if them idiots at Rolex would put a balanced width bracelet on it .... well that would mabe change my mind. I too have been starring at a few Rollies but the GMT Master II and the green crystal Milgauss are the only ones that get my attension.

After becoming used to Breitling, the Rollies all seem so small. Most of them are 40mm. That said, I wouldn't mind owning a submariner.

The only Rolex I would buy is the new GMT Master II. Of course, I didn't used to think that I would ever consider a Rolex, but I have to admit the GMT II is growing on me. Still, though, there are lots of other watches in the price range than I want more.

Well, the odd thing is I am actually going to be a voice of support for the idea!

As a previous owner of a 50th Anniversary Submariner I was irritated enormously by the tin foil clasp and sub-Lorus hollow-linked bracelet, and the way the marketing made out the 50th Anniversary piece was limited in production (meaning I paid top dollar) only for the market to suddenly become flooded with them when the popularity waned a little. Hmmmmm, I guess Rolex just found several thousand of them sitting in a drawer somewhere.

BUT having said all that, I find myself strangely drawn to the SDDS as well! The clasp and bracelet shortcomings are fixed, and I personally don't think the narrowness of the bracelet compared to the head is too bad. The SDDS very much fits into my category of preference, (i.e. an evolution of real classics of yesteryear, updated for the 21st century). And everything else aside, Rolex really do know how to build a bulletproof watch. The in-house movement is super smooth and will run forever, probably with minimal servicing too (although I wouldn't advise it), and they are beautifully finished watches. The dial (if a little "wordy" :? ) Cerachrom bezel, and the 43mm case are real works of art. Additionally, no matter what you think of the image and marketing of Rolex, the brand power of that crown on the dial is beyond doubt. Resale value will always be one of the highest on the market.

I'm sorry to say it guys, but I personally just think the SDDS is simply a better watch than the ones Mark's thinking of selling.

If I was you I'd go for it!

whats the rrp on the DSSD?

its an ok looking watch and ill bow to D8's knowledge on the model in terms of design, resale and movmt

but

are you comparing like with like? i get the feeling that the rolex is gonna be 2 or 3x the rrp of the poc or sohc so the comparision is a little biased.

personally im not a rolex fan but that doesnt mean i would do it if i really liked it id go for it.

problem for me is all this flipping watches to and fro must be losing you money??

if so why not sell all of them and buy something youll never sell??

i tend to spend ages trying and trying sometimes over years before i buy, i have been trying a sohc since it came out and love it but havent picked one up yet.but if i do i can bet you i wont sell it unless i run into money isssues and have no choice

hence why i havent sold any i have bought to date

Everyone has different reasons for buying and selling watches. For me, I like the variety. I picked my wife for life, my house for a long time, my car for at least 5 years, more likely 8 or 9... but my watches are here for entertainment. Once I get bored of a watch its gone. If I see something else I like, I sell something to buy it. I don't get too attached to them, unless they have sentimental value (which a couple do).

As for the money issue, I buy all my watche son the sales forums. I'm an opportunist, and will snatch good deals when I see them. I know many of you might not believe this, but my watch hobby has made money, quite a bit actually. Of the 150 or more watches I've sold, maybe 10 were sold for less than I paid. Some have made $700-1000, although this usually involves a pro-level refinishing, which I have learned to do myself. I would go so far as to say that my current collection has likely been paid for with the profits of past watches. This is a system that works for me, as I work from home and have the sales forums up on my monitor all day long, like someone watching a stock ticker. I guess you could say I'm an horological day trader. I enjoy this immensely, there aren't many hobbies that come without a financial drain. For me this is one of them.

I'm with D8, I like everything about the Rolex SDDS. I could never get into the previous Rolex's due to the size and the embarassingly cheap bracelet. I could easily buy a used GMT Master for around $3K, but I can't get past the bracelet. The new crop, with ceramic bezel, and imrpoved bracelets are great watches, and have addressed the shortcomings of the past. The SDDS has that kind of lasting classic style that will become an heirloom, and given the birth of my daughter 8 months ago, the SDDS might be a nice commemorative piece for her birth.

Thanks for all the input guys, keep the opinions coming.
Mark

I guess i'm going to be really off on this but i prefer the Sea-Dweller over the SDDS.

Simpler and more classy IMHO. Also way less expensive lol

I am not a Rolex guy by any stretch of the imagination, but the SDDS is definitely my favourite - though I am a long way from buying one.

For me though, if I had to trade three pieces for one then it would have to be a very special watch, and there would have to be absolutely no doubt in my mind. If I wasn't completely sure then I think I would regret the 'downsizing' of the collection - even if the overall quality went up.

Having said all that, I have a problem parting with watches anyway, so may not be the best judge.
