......AND NOW THEY HAVE!

Until recently this watch was only available in solid gold (with a corresponding solid gold price-tag!), but now it's available in steel!

It's got the awesome in-house El Primero 5 Hz movement but with the grande date complication (which was sadly lacking from the standard Defy Classic Open), in the 46.5mm Defy Classic Open case with added GMT functionality, plus (of course) a display back.

And in my opinion it looks FANFASTIC!!!!

I'd like to see it on the bracelet, or maybe even on leather, but either way THAT is a work of art.

Not bad, but there's nicer Zenith's designs IMHO.

I still have a deposit on a Chronomaster XXT Open Grande Date, and it is starting to call very loudly (wish this economy would pick up). After that I'm pretty sure I will be looking at another Zenith, but it won't be this one Driver8 - sorry.

I am becoming really taken by the Defy Extreme Open, but the price is way out of line for what it is. I also like the Mega Port Royal Concept, but that's the same movement as the Chronomaster so still considering. Of course an Academy would be nice............

After reading Dhalem's post I agree he has a point D8

I personally think it's fine but not my favourite Zenith design (no poetry, bad or other, intended  )

Very solid design, looks like a tank.

D8 - I agree, the Defy Classic Open was crying out for the big date feature (well, any date really).

Somehow, however, when it's all put together it just doesn't appeal to me quite as much as the regular Defy, it seems a little bit disjointed, but that's just my impression and I'm not sure I can explain it. I don't dislike it, I just agree with bnewbie and Tim that there are nicer Zenith designs.

Yuck from me. I like a lot of Zeniths and I have been thinking about forgoing the Panerai for a Zenith... for the next purchase but this one is the B01 of Zeniths for me! Sorry D8, to each his own. :)

You know Driver I usualy only have admiration for your selections and always thought you had excellent taste, but that thing looks hideous, I suppose I might be a bit too old fashioned for these hip watches though. Sorry.

I would get a BP over that in a heartbeat, and in your case I STRONGLY suggest opting for a BI in that price range.

The movement though is awesome, and although I do not like the bezel or the majority of the dial the rest of the case and teh font and hands look great.

Good point, that puts things in perspective quite sharply for me at least.

 All good comments guys!

Wow, this one was far more of an opinion-divider than I thought it would be be. Both the Defy ranges seem to polarise opinion somewhat but generally speaking most Breitling people seem to like the Defy Classic range. (The Defy Extreme is one for the mad-folk - sorry Roff! )

I personally absolutely love this models busy look, and yet as someone else said, it's still built like a tank. But I respect that it's not to everyone's taste.

@ Boney, at least someone here has some good taste! Sir I salute you! Yes it is available now but I'm not sure of the price..... but whatever it is I'm sure with a Stateside discount you could chop maybe 30% off the headline figure. The solid gold version is £24K GBP, so I'd be guessing that the Steel version would maybe be around the £10K to £12K GBP mark, before discount? Just guessing here.....

I might give an AD a call today just to see what the damage is likely to be as I've still yet to buy something to replace the Le Mans! I've been holding fire on the big ticket purchases of late due to the general financial climate, but this is one I'm seriously going to consider...... depending on the price of course.

I was unable to find any mention of it even on the Zenith website. The TZ guys (who are generally not very friendly, BTW) had nothing either. Where did you find this???? Please keep me in the loop, in any case. Those on the forum with a chronic case of Paneritis could not be expected to recognize the true beauty of such a work. :poke:

I agree that the Defy Extreme is for the 'mad folk'. I never liked it, but as my collection has grown and I have more room for a 'niche' piece or two I find myself attracted to the more unique pieces - same argument as for Romain Jerome.

I suspect that the list price might be nearer $15 - $16k based on other Defy Classics.

Roff, you were right. According to George, this watch retails for $15,500 in steel.
