OK, so I have my "standard" grail watches (i.e. those that I may very well be able to own one day......... with a bit of luck), but I just think I've just found my "ULTIMATE grail" watch in the shape of this baby from IWC -

Image

Only 70 ever made, perpetual calendar in-house IWC movement with a 7 day power reserve, in a full-size (i.e. 46.2mm) Big Pilot case, with a DISPLAY BACK, and made in STEEL so no soft precious metal to worry about!

That to me is absolute perfection.

Yours for around £20K GBP.

I NEED ONE!!!!

That's very nice - and I have to say, the price is reasonable for what it is.

Is that the one with the perpetual calendar you don't have to reset for like 400 years or some ridiculous number like that? I really love those IWC's.

It certainly is, but I feel on the verge of editing your original post to remove the word "ridiculous" and replace it with "amazingly fantastically awesome" instead!

I realise this is probably of interest to less than 0.01% of the membership on here, but I just found out that this IWC Perpetual Big Pilot has no extenal correctors on it. (Correctors are the tiny push-pieces on complicated watches that you need a cocktail stick or similar to push, and are used to adjust a number of the functions on the subdials).

I'd be incredibly surprised if you can control all the functions by the crown/winding-stem alone, so that means if it stops for any great length of time, you're screwed! If it was in storage for a year, all the various calendar functions would be a year out and without any correctors I'd assume you'd have to manually wind the watch through an entire year of revolutions, or at the very least perhaps there's a quick-set function via the winding stem, although I've not come across a quick-set function that can control day/date/month/year and moon-phase all in one.

I wouldn't be surprised if it would mean a trip back to the factory if it stopped for any great length of time.

(I'd still have one though! :D )

That's a little odd. Not quite sure that I understand the logic for that - it would be an engineering feat to hook the correctors into the crown so I diubt that they have done that. I guess there is something to be said for a 'clean' look, and maybe they figure that people who buy them would have winders, but it's a strange decision.

Good point.

That's the IWC I've been waiting for - style all the way!

Very very nice D8, I particularly love the busy dial.

Definitely in the 'dreaming' category for me but glad I've seen it.

Have you ordered one yet?

I guess I am in the minority here, I very much dislike that dial. To my eyes the busy dial takes away from the big pilot's classic design and clean look. That said that movement and functions are amazing, and I would dearly like to own the Portuguese Perpetual Calendar, which has that movement and for some reason makes the busy dial work a bit better.
