What is your take on Patek Phillippe watches? Everytime I run into a person that objects Lings, they always seem to talk up PP watches. Then when I ask if they own one, they all seeming say, the embarassingly resounding "No".

I asked my AD the very same question a couple of months ago. Obviously being as they are AD's for Patek Phillipe as well, he wasn't about to say they are overrated(!), but essentially he said that the movements are superb and will literally last forever if looked after. He also said that because of the small numbers they produce, practically every model is a limited edition.

Personally I find them far too small, delicate and dressy for my tastes...... and not to mention outrageously expensive! But to be honest, even if I could justify the expense I don't think I'd own one. PP only ever seem to work in gold (which I find too soft to wear everyday) and the styling just doesn't float my boat in the slightest. (And you can buy a hell of a lot of Breitlings for the price of one PP!)

As a watch, they're astonishing.

But, they're also VERY dressy and it wouldn't fit in my everyday life. I wouldn't mind having one for the proper occasions, but I doubt I'd buy a new one from an AD - a used one in good condition would be sufficient (especially regarding the price...).

Can I ask, Aleister, what makes them so astonishing? Or is it just the movement, and finish etc, like my AD informed me?

Apart from the movement and the finish, I like enormous craftmanship and artwork that is put into every single watch. Compared to Breitling, it makes Breitling look like something mass-produced. The amount of working hours put into the watch, for manufacturing and QC is amazing.

They are nice and I used to own one but honestly i like to wear my watches and mine constantly needed attention. Got to where it was only for dress purposes. For that i no have my Bucherer

They are well made watches, and I've handled and closely looked at a couple of them, but to be honest, I'm not sure where all the money goes into.. perhaps the in-house movement. The cases were nicely crafted solid gold affairs, but very basic in style. Dials were quite basic and honestly, I did not see how something like that cost so much money, but their movements are famous, and they do make some of the most complicated movements in the world.

But just not my style.
