A few more - and better - photos of my new Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra, Caliber 8500. Taken by my friend Ian today, while we were comparing Omegas. His being the Constellation Double Eagle Perpetual Calendar, which is also a beautiful watch indeed.

Sorry for the late reply Carl - only just noticed you asked me a question!

The bridges are basically the other parts you can see that have the brushed finish like the rotor. I'm sure Roff could give a very accurate definition, but basically they are the series of plates (or in some movements, bars) that sit where the backplate would on an older movement. In short, they support / hold in place the various moving parts of the movement.

Driver8 answers it well. If you think about a watch movement the moving parts are supported from above and below. Historically the top plate and the base plate would provide this support but these days the top plate has been replaced in efforts to save weight, show more of the movement, accommodate rotors more easily, etc. Now bridges act to support two or more elements of the running train or other functional components, 'bridging' across the pieces.

Historically, Geneva school of watchmaking decorates bridges with cote de Geneve or Geneva stripes.

After I asked the question, I took a much closer look at the detail. I guess it's pretty obvious to me now exactly what you mean. Thanks for taking the time to answer my question.
