Don't hate 'em at all. Just don't see as much value in them. I looked hard at a pearl dial Monaco a couple of years ago, on sale it was $3000, but the build quality compared to, for example, a Breitling wasn't in the same league. Sure was handsome, but I couldn't do it. I still look at pre-owned Tags for a weekender, if the right deal comes up.

Not everyone hates tag...

A few years ago, I went to a bachelor party and saw some friends for the first time in years. One of them admired my Breitling Motors T. Another friend shouted, "it's no TAG though" and pointed to someone wearing a Quartz Tag and said "Now that's a watch."

I was once sitting at dinner with a friend who was wearing a $20 chinese skeleton watch he bought in Bali. I was wearing a vintage Chronomat. Someone noticed his watch and asked me if i hoped to have a watch as nice as my friend's one day. I answered that not all of us could hope to have my friend's good fortune in watches.

 What model Chronomat, btw?

I was out with a group once, and I noticed one of the guys had on what appeared to be a ceramic watch. I asked him, "Is that a ceramic watch?" He replied, "Yes...it's an Armani." Now, if he likes it, that's cool; I'm not going to put him down for liking his watch. But he clearly thought the fact it was an Armani made it hot sh*t, and was quite proud to declare the brand, even though I hadn't asked. I just nodded. He didn't ask about my Ling.

People are drawn to unique. Skeleton watches, pieces that look a little different draw attention. We go to polo shirts on Fridays and every day between Memorial Day and October at the office, and it's interesting to see what responses I get to the collection. Nobody said anything about my Ulysse Nardin, or the Panerai when I briefly owned it. Same with the Steelfish. A couple of people noticed my old Chronospace. Hardly anybody gives a second thought to my Rolex, except if they are drawn in by the Pepsi bezel. Let's face it--there are literally millions of Rolexes and millions more that look just like them. The Breguet draws a little attention. But the Navi Heritage in white--people notice, and they love it.

I have a Tag and love it. Didn't buy it based on the response that I would get from others - the second I saw it I knew it would be in my humble collection. They are definitely overpriced so I waited until I was able to find it at a reasonable number. Truth is watches are niche - most people just don't know or give a whoot.

i cant speak for anyone else about the Tag hate. I for one do not hate the brand. But personally the brand is just not for me. My decision is purely based on looks and to me the watch just doesnt appel to me.

as for top watch brands I do believe that Breitling would pop up in conversation. As a general brand that people would know. I live in Vancouver BC and Breitlings out here are like Honda civics on the street. Alot of people have them.

Really? I'm in Vancouver and I see Tags more than breitlings, I've only seen a few and I live downtown.
