Rolex - Jewelery for people that know nothing about watches.

It's the people who make comments like this who are the ones who know squat about watches. An idiotic generalization that has been proven wrong by the very members of this forum who own and have owned Rolex watches.... who actually know quite a bit about watches.

I agree with Fear, I'd never wear a Hublot.

Why not use my entire quote vs doing a little convenient editing? I said "in most cases." Evidently that must hit close to home. My experience is the Rolex wearers I've encountered know very little about what's on their wrist other than what it cost. I peruse the Rolex forum sometimes and know they take shots at Breitling owners and their blingy watches too. Simply, I just haven't encountered a Rolex owner that knows anything about watches. Sorry if you have a hard time with that.

Guys I have nothing but the utmost respect for Paul. And I've known him long enough to know that he appreciates all watches, Breitling or not. But generally speaking there are many many owners that really do not know what's on their wrist, whether Breitling, Rolex, Omega, you name it. Even the boys at TRF say most owners have no clue what they're wearing.

Us watch guys are a different, if not a rare breed. I think his quote was just misunderstood.

Doesn't hit close to home for me. I've owned plenty of watches including Rolex and I know my stuff. You're generalization is just comical.

Evidently you haven't encountered the Rolex owners on this very board and in this thread who know what's on their wrist have you?

andrew i agree that "us watch guys are a different if not rare breed". but the comment would seem like a poke at Rolex owners in general.

Well to be fair, the thread is asking for pokes somewhat and other brands seem to be getting a pass on being poked at because some members agree with the sentiment:

well to be fair, FEAR said his opinion on the brand. Paul is talking about the actual owners. In my mind theyre mutually exclusive.

It's cool Adrian! 8)

You know me man... I'm a Rolex convert but I never took Paul's comments personally. Everyone has different tastes. Some people's tastes evolves. Others stay true to a brand, niche, etc.. But......

threads like these never turn out nice, as Roff stated. But I also think it's because us WISes are also very passionate about our hobby.

I love my overpriced and too small jewelery! :D

In all seriousness, I know a lot about watches, probably too much. Back when I knew nothing about watches, I did not want a Rolex. Once I acquired a lot more knowledge of the brand, I learned to look past the negative (at times) aura that surrounds Rolex owners and now I have two of them.

Of course, I love my Aerospace too!

I fall in the camp of "never say never", although (like others said before me) I doubt I will ever care about anything from companies like Jacob & Co, Hublot, etc.

I tent to like watches made by watch companies, not watches made by case designers. If the brand did not contribute in one way or another to the history of horology, I have no or very little interest in it.

I am not ever going to shell out my hard earned cash for something which I'm not going to get some proper mileage out of. Therefore, I'd be hard pressed to buy a pink and light blue Franc Muller, a snake pattern Hublot, a screamingly yellow Graham or really anything that made me look like a pornographer really, because, although such pieces may be cool and fashionable now, for me at 25, I doubt I'd still be wearing them 30 years from now, at 55. My collection is thus made of pieces, perhaps with exception of my equally childish and beloved Panerai, which are more on the conservative side. My taste is clearly directed at the "grandes classiques" and finds itself gravitating towards the likes of the Explorer II, the SS Daytona, the DJ I, the Speedy Pro, the Nautilus or the AP RO jumbo...

Lets turn this thread on its head - just give me Mr. October's collection to combine with my own and a slightly larger wrist and it's all good. :)

SLRdude, those are some very, very nice photos.

Back on topic, I see the Hublot hate (and I believe its warranted), but I cant help but still be drawn to them. Many of them are pretty interesting looking, although they are absurdly priced for what they are. My biggest concern would be that the novelty would wear off very quickly.

BTW, who is Mr. October?

Take a look here RJ.

He's one of our awesome daily contributors to our "what watch are you wearing" thread. Of course some new pieces since then. His father's collection is out of this world.
