One of my fav movies of all time is a "B" movie of sorts made in the 80s starring Matthew Broderick - War Games. This teenage hacker tries to back door a game site, gets into NORAD instead, and unwittingly starts a countdown to nuclear war. The NORAD computer, Joshua, tries to "learn" by running every possible themonuclear scenario, faster and faster, until the thing explodes and the war room goes dark. As the lights return Joshua says, "Strange game. The only winning move is not to play."

Yep, I love that movie, surely do.

We've gone from talking about Panerai's look, to their owners being pompous, to racism on eBay, to watching Oprah, to good Samaritan stories....what an interesting conversation.

If you were so inspired by the goodness of Panerai owners why didn't you just donate that $8k to the local red cross, or cancer research, rather than purchase a piece jewelry? If you want to make this into a good Samaritan conversation then a lot better things could have been done with that money to be part of the good Samaritan club rather that buying a watch. This isn't about being a good samaritan, or morals, or ethics, it's about a watch... One that I just don't get! And that's fine..I don't have to get it but this is a forum for us all to express our opinions as politely or abrasively as we choose. The thought of buying something because the owners are good Samaritans just sounds so odd and egotistical to me. Sorry but it does.

And btw...if you ever buy one of my auctions, I'll ship to wherever you are, Indonesia, Antartica, or the moon. Your money is green and that's all that should matter.

H2F wrote:
Welp, mfserge, all I can say is your abrasive personality is as mainstream as it gets, and kindda exactly underscore my point on how it's so uncool to try to be generally nice nowadays. 'Cause then either you're a patsy, or you're a pompous hollier-than-thou do-gooder, am I right?

Hey, at least I did started by saying it's hard to explain. I'm a brand new owner, and those are just my opinions. But I went and became an owner EXACTLY after reading those good samaritans Risti stories. It touches me just like Oprah brought tears to my eyes when she gave everyone in the audience a car. Maybe many will only focus on the fact that she did it on national TV just to boost her ratings, but to me that does not detract from the good she did to all those people in her audience. Hard to see where the harm and crime was in wanting to do good?

As far as racial prejudice goes, I'm guessing you've never experienced it? I'm Indonesian and on most eBay auctions you will read "Will ship to everywhere except Indonesia and Africa". When I was looking for a second Ling, I contacted a B-1 seller at TZ and we came close to a price. Once I told him I'm from Indonesia, the watch was suddenly "already sold". So, yes, to me it was important to belong to a group that transcends racial prejudices regardless how silly it seemed to others.

At the end though mfserge, we are all in Breitlingsource ONLY because we like Breitlings. Which means that other than :lingsrock:, no one cares! So do carry on with your rage against my pompous ass, the stupid Panerai crown guard, Pams in general and all other Panerai owners -- it certainly is entertaining!

definately not pams biggest fan but i dont hate them either. IMO the watches do look similar from style to style, but i do like some of their pieces. as for price most are comparable with the higher end lings so not much to gripe about in that department.

You can satisfy some of the people some of the time and none of the people all of the time.

Given that mfserge's opinion of me can't get worse I'll say publicly what many people are saying to me privately.

mfserge is showing all the signs of being a troll who thrives on creating controversy, I strongly suggest that we all show maturity and stop feeding the beast.

One of the things that I love about this place is the fact that we are so laid back and friendly. We are also very welcoming - admin has made it clear that he welcomes everyone regardless of their opinions, and Driver8 and I are happy to apply that ethos to the forum.

Sometimes we get members who take advantage of that approach, and experience would suggest that the best thing to do is ignore them. I think that this thread has some very interesting points, it could, and should have been a much more pleasant experience for all.

For mfserge directly,

You said in your last post - "I don't have to get it but this is a forum for us all to express our opinions as politely or abrasively as we choose." Emphasis added by me.

That is categorically not true.

The first post (a sticky) on the main Breitling forum is entitled 'Just a few courtesies' - viewtopic.php?f=1&t=855

Highlighted in that post are the following words:

"And FINALLY, Please respect your fellow posters! Not everyone is the same as you or has the same opinion as you, so please try and be open-minded. Respect other people's opinions and they will respect yours. Name-calling and insults are childish and have no place on this forum."

So....

You are more than welcome to post here, and you are more than welcome to express whatever opinions that you please, but you are expected to do so in a respectful manner and show respect for the people who disagree with you. If you cannot manage that then this is not the forum for you. I wish you every luck in the sales threads that you have, and I hope that we can have the benefit of your thoughts and opinions without the unnecessary attitude and insults. Healthy debate makes the forum better for all, acting like a troll reflects solely on you.

I'm sorry for the OP that this thread has gone this way, let's make this the last such thread.

Certainly an "interesting" thread.

In an effort to get back to the topic on hand.

I too am one of those that don't 'get' Panerai's. I've tried a couple on and although they fit me well, at this stage of my life they're just not for me, I'm not enamored enough with the look of them. However, like all watches, I appreciate their history, appeal, popularity and the constitution of the inside, which is pretty impressive. Yes a lot of them 'look' similar but as others have said, they are all slightly different at the end of the day. The company also markets the brand very well which combines well with their exclusivity.

Price I have no issue with but for that money I would prefer to purchase another brand and therein lies the crux of the matter for me.

Roff, not once have I resorted to name calling of any kind...nor have I singled out any one specific person... Yet you feel the need to call me a 'troll'. Regardless of what you have been told privately you have crossed the line and for that you should have your moderator badge taken away. You have acted far more abrasive now than any of my posts.

And you called Panerai owners snobbish.... That sure doesn't sound respectful..a bit hypocritical actually. Maybe you need to re-read your 'just a few courtesy' post.....does it say anything in there about calling people trolls?? I guess it's courteous to call people trolls.

This is a great post!

I'm not a big fan of the PAMs but if you like them, GREAT.

I tried on a few. Not my cup of tea.

I am attacted to Panerai. I like the simplicity of the look and the different "models" while very similar in looks, offer a little something different. Its almost like being to customize a Panerai to include exactly what YOU want in thier watches, just by buying the appropriate model. Kinda cool marketing plan. I have looked at getting a 112, 111 of even a 312, but as much as I would like to own one, there are other brands and models that I am drawn to more (at least at this point).

Panerai are unique (IMO) because of the easily recognizable stylings and the extreme amount of factory and aftermarket straps to dress the watch up to your liking. They are definitely a like em or hate em brand, but so is Rolex. I would buy a Panerai over a Rolex any day, but I would also buy a Rolex... (well maybe).

The OP deserves better than the attitudes he has received on this thread. This thread is no different than someone posting a thread gooing over the Rolex Deepsea (or a B1 for that matter). I have seen and worn the Deepsea and DONT like it. To me the bracelet ruins the watch because of the taper, but that is my personal opinion and I dont want to add negative comments to thread besmearching someone elses love of that watch. The same if true about every kind of watch available. Someone somewhere hates the watch you love.

Sergio, for some reason I see you posting more and more negative type responses and dont understand your motivations. You have been a member here for a while and USED to be just as cordial as everyone else, but something has changed. Frequent lashing out towards Roff is occuring more and more and the responses in this thread are bordering on hostile towards a few other members. I know that sometimes things can get out of hand and we say things we regret later. I have done this (in the past) with my comments towards Kuretime, and I regret our exchange and wouldnt think of saying those things now. If I dont particularly like a member or thier postings, I dont post replies.

Im sure this wouldnt be tolerated on TZ or WUS and you would have been booted by now. Our "community" is more laid back, but not a free for all where the posting start to drive members away. The Admin or the mods are only going to allow so much.

I hope that what ever is troubling you gets worked out because the current group of postings and exchanges are not helpful and whether you know it or not, you are in the minority with your recent viewpoints towards Roff and the recent overall negative attitude you put forth in your words. I wish you would just agree to disagree and move on. There is something to be said about the old saying of "If you dont have something nice to say, dont say anything." Thats not to say people dont have differing views, but then you know that already.

In the end were all nuts for spending the money we do on these time pieces that we cherrish so much. What ever brand does it for you, is your deal. What ever brand does it for me, is my deal. And the world goes round and round....

Lashing out.... Hostile... What are you people reading?? Because I think a watch is ugly and I resent the fact that some Panerai owners have enormous egos... I'm a hostile person? There's a difference between sarcasim and hostility.

touche, touche. I think the problem might be the perception (or lack thereoff) of your responses and when you dont have a terrible amount of posts, and the recent ones could be interpreted as nothing but negative.... well maybe your sarcasm isnt coming off as designed. if thats the case, I understand and retract my comments about being hostile. But understand your "humor" or sarcasm isnt being understood as you are intending. :)

I've added my .02 to the OP's comments and my .03 towards yours post. There isnt anything else to say (from me) that would be constructive to pass the "woobie" to someone else. :)

I am friends with a few PAM owners, a small sample but they don't seem like the bad guys this thread would suggest. The watches are nice, especially the black one(!), but they are not for me. The limited quantity aspect is nice though.....

And to the guy who said the Yankees and their "fans" are terrible: I would argue they are even worse than you suggest.....I was at a game a couple years ago and the "fans" didn't know what a balk was. Yup......Go Sox.

hmm not sure if a person wearing a fake panerai came over and kick OP's dog or something...but from all the PAM owners voicing their opinions in this thread, i don't see any "enormous egos" etc...most of the name callings and attitude is coming from the OP.

you wanted opinions and viewpoints, you got 'em. panerai is certainly not for everyone. i don't expect the majority to be enamored with the brand, especially on a breitling forum where most of the dial designs are on polar opposites of a pam. i've owned 4 pams...love everything about them...the simple design, the sandwich dial, the lume, the contour of the radiomir case, and yes the handwound manual movement. they're probably overpriced for what they are, but like most other notable brands the money spent isn't just for the eta movement, or the easily copied case/dial. i like panerai, but i also like breitling, iwc, jlc, etc....if you don't, that's fine too. no sweat off my back.
