I like to think of a mechanical watch as a "timepiece with soul" compared to quartz; "watch with battery"...

I wonder if I detect a very slight hint of contempt for the more accurate battery powered alternative there?

Just because you cannot get a soldering iron small enough to work your magic inside the little electrickery chiplet thingies!

Go sharpen a screwdriver Vanessa

So what does that make the Seiko Kinetic watches where a mechanical rotor charges a battery?

28,800 frequencies of oscillations(4Hz) per hour.

I was just wondering about the math...could someone clear this up for me please?

I know this is a very late response, but it is better late than never :D

Hz is the number of oacillations per second. so if you have a watch with 28,800 beats per hour, divide that by 60 and it gives you 480 beats per minute, then divide again by 60 it gives you 8 beats per seconds or what you can call (in physics jargon :D ) 8Hz.

IMHO 4Hz is a mistake, but then again maybe there is a catch i am missing, so experts on the matter are more than welcome to have their input.

I forgot the exact theory behind this, but my guess is that with one oscillation of the balance wheel the wheel turns approximately 280 degrees ONE WAY, and than with the second oscillation it turn 280 degrees the OTHER WAY, so it takes 2 oscillations to make the balance wheel to make the full trip. Maybe that's why they devide the Hz once more and get to 4 ?? It's just a thought...

Correct - if you think of the more traditional use of Hz - wave frequencies it is measured for a complete cycle - i.e. the part of the wave above the line and the part below the line. In a watch there is a vibration that triggers each half of the wave - i.e. one vibration for the top half (clockwise rotation) and one for the bottom half (anticlockwise rotation).

Simple really

Quartz of course, but nothing beats a mechanical movement. I'll never own another qartz movement again.
