I'm also not a fan of Tag's F1, neither the Aquaracer.

I used to have a Link Caliber 6, much better looking IMO, but Oris is a good advice.

:?: Each to their own I guess

That's a bit like saying that a Navitimer is no good because it looks like a Sinn, and I can't agree on the looks, but we can't all like the same thing.

However the Rotary has Romans, non lumed and different styled hands, a different movement layout - the escapement and main spring are in different locations, (and they are the most visible parts of a skeleton) and a totally different crown.

I also had a Tag F1, which I regretted buying within a couple of weeks. They dont have the elegance of an Oris. F1's are ugly and cheap looking - IMO. But each to their own.

Oris, you get a sturdy well made watch there. I only part chopped mine to get my SuperOcean.

Definitely go for an Oris. They arent as common or common looking as a Tag either.

Many Oris have display backs to show a beautiful high quality Swiss movement. I have a TT3 Day/Date - for the same price as an F1 - with just a boggo quartz engine not worth putting on display. My colleague at work has an F1. The Oris is head and shoulders better in quality. I sometimes think Oris must be one of the watch worlds better kept secrets, which is OK with me!

Kirium and Link series are much nicer... I had a kirium and a Link Searacer a few years ago, and i liked the weight and feel. You can find cosc automatic versions for under a grand on ebay. if you held either and an F1, there is no comparison. the kirium is on the smaller side but still loved that watch. wouldnt touch and F1...

I think a Tag could definitely be considered a 'starter' luxury watch although my preference isn't for the F1 series - I agree that they do look a little like a child's watch.

I'm not big on Tag's but if I had to own one I'd go for the Carrera - nice looking watch in my books...

Seems to b a consensus on the Oris - personally not a raving fun but I can appreciate the brand.

Anyway you have lots of information and competing opinions  I wish you the best of luck in your decision making process!!

F1's movement is silly. The watch is amazingly overpriced.

Personally (and I apologise to anyone who owns one), but I can't stand Tag Formula 1. I'm not a fan of Tag in general, but the F1 is the worst of the lot IMO.

A mate of mine had one and it always looks like a kid's watch to me : a kind of costly Swatch! As Otto rightly said, it's a lump of plastic with a flimsy bracelet. I've personally owned two Tags - an auto Aquagraph, and a quartz Aquaracer - and I grew out of them very quickly..... and they're both "proper" metal models. I think the Formula 1 would be a million times worse.

I also totally agree with the other guys on their alternative choices. In that price range, Oris would be choice ANY day of the week : they're all automatic and are very nicely built. Sure, they're not as well known as Tag on the street, but they're all the better for that in my opinion. Tag has a bit of a "wide-boy", used car saleman image in this country.

:yeahthat With one exception, the Tag Aquagraph is every bit as nice and most serious dive watchs out there, superb engineering, nice movement, practical functions, and well built. It is a bargain IMHO, and feels like it was made by a different company than the rest of the Tag line. I owned the F1 for about a day and flipped it. Admin's assessment of the F1 are right on, cheap, plasticy and shouldn't cost more than $200. I'd take a $100 Seiko over the F1. Sorry to those who own them, no offense intended, just my opinion.

A f1 is fine for someone as far as a 1st nice watch. its a quartz, so no need for instructions on use like with a automatic. oris only makes mechanicals. pretty decent watches for the price. tissot has a few nice ones also. the new f1 is pretty nice.

You're right about the Aquagraph being a class above the rest of the range in terms of engineering. The clasp for example was more like an Omega clasp in terms of design and probably better built, and the way you have to press the bezel down in order to turn it is a nice safety touch too. However, I still found that I personally out-grew the styling a little. It just reminded way too much of the Zeon watches I loved as a 7 year old!

But I agree that in terms of technical competance it was a good watch. (Mine gained like an absolute nightmare, but that was nothing that a good regulation wouldn't have fixed).

My local Costco has a white faced, non-chronograph Tag F1 for $400. The same model at an AD is $900, and I can't figure out why the price is so low. I have been looking for a watch in the $300-500 price range to replace my Wenger. Do you think that this tag is worth the price, and would be a good upgrade?
