You're aware that the product is made in the same place either way, right? You might be rewarding a mom-and-pop shop over Wal-Mart if you buy from the former, but that's retail. The impact on the manufacturing sector is the same either way.

Exactly, it all comes from the same place. Unless you own a mom and pop store you should love Wal Mart. Wal Mart is saving us consumers money and the inefficient mom and pop stores either compete or they should go find another line of business that they are good at. Wal Mart adds jobs so this would be a wash in terms of small businesses that go under, and even if it isn't then why should the million, inefficient, small business owners survive instead of there being benefit for the 100 million Wal Mart consumers?

Don't you mean your ultrasonic cleaner?

I'll let our UK AD friend Tozzleozzle use the ultrasonic machine.

I wore a watch into the shower once just to see what all the fuss was about. I was a pretty strange experience.

If it makes the Wal-mart haters any happier, they did not carry this model. Ended up going to Macys, where the nice sales lady gave me a 25% off discount (something about a friends and family sale that they had going on through the 30th).

I hope the Gshock secret shoppers don't go to Macys and find out that they are discounting, they may pull the brand from the store!! :guns:

I wonder what actually happens in cases like this, where the merchandiser discounts. The store gave 25% off everything in the store other than fragrances and something else, no limitations on jewelry or watches, with the exception of Tag - 10% off instead of 25%.

Good pickup. I've got the white version and it's the most comfortable of all the G Shocks I've owned.

I know lots of people love G-shocks and their ilk but I just don't get it at all. Never been a lover of digitals even when I worked in a jewellers when they were all the rage, I still wore a proper watch with hands. Know, I'd rather go watchless (heresy!) than wear a digital and I have a very battered Citizen eco-drive for rough duties ( and man, doesn't it show that it's stood some hammer time). Just my two cents.

Like I say, I wear them primarily to work out. The ability to have quick, easy time-keeping (including chrono and count-down functions), with maximum readability, in a lightweight watch I don't care about getting sweated or banged up, makes a digital watch incomparable for those circumstances. That doesn't even take into account the heart rate monitor function in my other Ironman, which no analog watch - mechanical or quartz - could offer, and which I find invaluable for making sure I stay in my target zone during cardio workouts. In these situations, digital watches are simply the best tools for the job, at least for my own needs.

In any situation where I actually care about being well-presented, though, I would never wear one. I know an attorney who wears a very dated looking, '80s vintage digital to court, and I'm with you - I just don't get it.

I agree with you. The purchase of the G-Shock was purely for function. I wanted a moonphase and tide watch that I could wear fishing and not be concerned about a link breaking during a cast. Now that I have it, I do like it quite a bit, I won't wear it to work though, but definitely would take it on the next cruise, or anytime I plan on going in the water.

There is a difference between simply being a beater watch, and being designed and tested specifically to resist impacts and high shock levels. Part of the G-Shock's appeal was that it was a pioneer in this area. It's not just a cheap plastic watch, it has engineering and innovation and some historical value too IMO.

I think everyone should have a quartz in the collection if but naught to represent just how cool a thermo compensated quartz is. That's why I bought a Reno Airwolf.

Would I wear it in the shower? No, but I wouldn't wear it in a pool either, or any kind of serious physical workout where it would just gather swear, or get caught on something.

Does one really need a watch on all the time?

I can't think of a single event where I would need a really cheap beater were I simply must have the time on my wrist, despite really trying to where I wouldn't have my cell phone in my pocket or close by.

Cutting the grass, yardwork, atv-ing, swimming, at the park with the kids, dog park, anything messy like an art project with the kids, boating, camping, etc.
