I'll throw in my vote for the submariner too... but it can swing both ways...

because it's a classic you can OR can't get bored of it for the future... lol

Obviously this comes down to personal preference, but I for one am completely with you on that one, Rebel. Sub all the way (although not the green one!)

I like both, the black sub and the white-dial explorer II. I have never liked the green sub and would not consider buying one. Good luck!

tried on a new all black submariner...

I have a dumb question, which I think has already been answered through context, but I'll ask it anyway. When you say "new all black submariner," do you mean the 116610LN (stainless steel case/bracelet, black dial, black ceramic bezel insert), or is there a new PVD version that is literally all black? Assuming you mean the stainless version, then my preference between the two watches is the Sub-C. The new Explorer 2 has some strong selling points, but the Sub just has a classic look that the Explorer 2 doesn't match, imo.

Speaking of Explorers and hand size, I fully agree with Sergio that the new larger dial called for larger hands. What a pity Rolex didn't realize this when redesigning the Explorer 1.

Rolex doesn't make a PVD Sub. Although some jack@$$ took a brand new green ceramic sub and had it PVD and it was listed for sale on another forum...what a disguisting thing to do, it looked hideous.

As for the Explorer 1, if they make that watch in the same case as the DJII then it would be VERY VERY tempting. I like the Explorer 1 but it's too small.

I didn't think Rolex did that, but an internet search brings up all kinds of older Sub models with PVD coating. Like I said, I had pretty much answered the question through context, but given that there is only one black Sub-C, I was a little thrown by the term "all black." It's not like there an is official Sub with a green dial and a black bezel, or black dial and blue bezel, or what have you.

Actually I do have another question, perhaps a little more on point this time: why is the choice between a Sub and an Explorer 2? Why not a GMT-IIc and an Exp. 2? That would seem to make more sense, since each have the same features. Going with the Sub would necessarily mean going without a GMT feature. If that's important to you, the GMT-IIc would be the way to get that feature while (relatively) maintaining the Sub look.

That Explorer I does look pretty sharp. If I had a choice of two new rolex models it would be between the Explorer I and Milgauss. Those no date rollies do something for me.

Don't want to hijack the thread but I think the minute hand is a bit too small on the new 39mm Explorer. Kinda looks like they used the same hands from the discontinued 36mm model. Still a great looking watch though.

That is what they did. The hour and minute hands are the same as on the 36mm model. Oddly, Rolex did incorporate a longer seconds hand.

interesting replies to my question.

I have nothing against the GMT which is a fantastic watch obviously.

I went into the AD to look at a pre owned non ceramic sub and lost interest when it became clear that it was not complete with box and papers.

as the brand new ceramic sub was "only" £1200 more then I got very tempted and nearly bought it there and then as I agree with all that have said above that it is a classic in the truest sense of the word and I think only looks better in the new ceramic model.

having seen the green one up close, the £300 premium makes no sense at all and it would be no contest as the traditional black model would get my vote every time.

I had seen pictures of the new explorer II and liked it and as either watch involve £5,000 or so I decided to wait to see both and compare as I cannot afford to buy both. if there is a new GMT in stock at the AD at the same time then I can complicate my choice even more.

I dont think either the GMT function of the water resisance are deal breakers for me as I will but the one that makes me smile the most when I put it on.

as a matter of interest has any one in the UK secured a discount from an AD on the sub C ?

Here's a pic I found comparing the new Exp2 to the GMT IIc.

Always loved the Explorer II. New model is even better.
