So lately I have been thinking about what watch I would like to add once I get my dress watch into the fold. I am still sold on the IWC Port Hand Wound for this spot, but as it is a pure dress watch i would like to add one that really takes the collection to another level. While the purchase may elude me for some time I still catch myself considering such things.

Anyhow, I have really set my sites on two watches that I think could be the king (foreshadowing) of my collection. The watch that all others in my collection bow to.

First up....The Rolex Milgauss GV. Just a great very cool looking watch that could easily reign over most any collection.

Secondly, I have really come to admire the AP Royal Oak Offshore lineup, but the case size looks like it may be too much for the 6.75 inches I am carrying. Enter the AP Royal Oak 15300. I have only recently come to admire this watch, but from the looks of it she sure is a stunner.

So there it is fellas....Of the two which would you consider for the top spot? Are there any comparable watches i should consider?

Of those two the Royal Oak without a doubt. In tried that on recently and it's very comfortable and looks great on my wrist which is basicallybthe same size as yours. The bracelet on that AP is a lot more comfortable than the ROO bracelet.

I believe the Rolex is much more of a "dress" watch. The AP has much more of a sporty look to it. But either one of them can go either way.

If you are looking for strictly a "dress" watch with a "dress" look - I don't think either of these fit the bill.

A Rolex DateJust is a "dress watch." http://www.rolex.com/en#/rolex-watches/ ... 16234-0032

I don't really have any other recommendations tho - I'm sure others will :)

the RO 15300 jumbo is amazing! you really need to try it on to appreciate how beautiful it is. plus from my understanding it has a new movement ( i believe). once you see how it fits on your wrist, the detail of the dial and the construction of the bracelet,.....the price wont be hard to justify. alot of people say that the subc is a great all around watch, well this piece ranks right up there with that.

I am hoping to be able to acquire a IWC Portuguesse hand Wound to fill my dress watch spot. After that I would really like to find the "One" watch. The timepice that ticks off every box and will be the unquestionable leader of the pack.

Once again just thinking out loud with a slow Saturday at home. I have a long journey ahead if I want to add two great peices of this quality to round out my collection.

The Royal Oak, no contest. I was looking at the blue and black dials yesterday. Also a white dial Chrono with black subs. All three very, very nice. Also looked at the Milgauss GV - it's quite nice too, but something about the ROs put them in another class for me.

But I'm dead set on lasting at least 90 days without buying a watch and am getting close. Thank God for the methadone clinics. :)

Of the 2 you listed...I would go with the AP no question.

I'd get the AP

More folks for the AP than expected. But I will ask this....If it were the AP vs a more mainstream (read less goofy) would it still be as easy a call? Maybe vs a Sub-C or GMTIIC?

Keep in mind you are looking at about a $6,000 price difference.

If it were between the AP, Sub-C, and GMT IIc, then I would go GMT. You have an awesome diver already so no need for a Sub. That narrows it down to the AP and GMT....I love my GMT so I would go that route, it's about half the price of the AP and just as awesome.

I guess I am thinking a bit optimistically from used sale threads ranging in the $7-8K range. New Milgauss might run $6500 or so?

I was sort of getting the vibe that a well cared for Royal Oak might be a steal in the second hand market versus a New GV. Just the musings of a fella with too much time and imagination.

No brainer for me: AP all the way.

I'll be the contrarian. Irrespective of the quality or brand cachet, the style of the RO has always reminded me of the things I'd see in my grandparents' 1970s mobile home. I've never been able to get past that. Granted, the RO probably costs more than all the contents of their mobile home combined - several times over - but I'm talking styling here, not quality or price. Having said that, the Milgauss has that lighting bolt second hand, which annoys me; it's also missing a date. Assuming cost is not a factor, my choice would depend on my mood on any given day, although if the Milgauss had a standard second hand, that's the one I would go with, lack of date notwithstanding. However, just about any other "mainstream" Rolex model would win without question: Sub-C, GMT-IIc, DJII,YM-II, and probably even the Explorer.

Actually even mint condition used APs are running anywhere from 8.5k to 10k... my observation only... as much as I'm warming up to AP too, I'd say Milgauss... if you're not into the Rolex then you can always sell it and upgrade...
