This one is for the experts. I read in this article here http://www.chronometrie.com/eta2892/eta289202.html that the date flipping mechanism in the 2892-2 (aka -02 or A2) is "foolproof, such that one can change the time whether it’s engaged or not without damaging anything."

Does this mean one can use the quick-set date feature in the hours around midnight without damaging anything?

If so, does this further mean that the same is also true for my Colt GMT which uses the ETA 2893-2 (i.e. the 2892-2 with a GMT complication)??

I would need to see how it actually works, but I wouldn't risk it. The wording specifically says change the time rather than change the date. The instantaneous change isn't in itself an indication that the movement isn't engaged for a longer period, it just means that the move itself is triggered quickly as opposed to the 7750.

Well..... looking at the date setter in the picture, it appears that one could use the quick set feature any time they wanted to. The date jumper at the 11:00 position appears to have a spring loaded pawl. If you turn the hands CW, the date advances when the pawl comes around and move the outer date ring. If you were to turn the hands CCW the pawl would have to retract as it passed the tooth on the date ring. Otherwise, the whole thing would jam. Looking at the quick set mechanism at about 4:30, it appears that one can only advance the date so there is no danger in moving the date ring CCW and jamming a tooth against the date jumper pawl.

This is all opinion based on looking at pictures. As usual, don't try this at home and you mileage may vary.

I'll look in the coffin and see if I have a 2982 anywhere, but I doubt it.

I'd love to hear from anybody with firsthand experience. Anyone have a watch with a 2892 who can check the instructions and report what they say? Or worse, anbody screw one up by using the quickset at the wrong time?

BB and Chrono-Matic 49 have 2892 base and they also have quick set date warning in the Handbooks.

Good enough for me! If the instructions warn you not to do it, then don't try it. My analysis was based on looking at the pictures, not actual hands on. Obviously, the pictures don't reveal everything about the date set mechanism.
