A hundred-year-old Patek? Talk about a fantastic family heirloom...

You're
a lucky man, indeed. Take good care of it. As to Patek and Rolex looks, it is truly
a matter of taste. I've owned eight Rolexes, and I've found them to be
consistently attractive and very well-made. As to Patek, I've never owned one
(that damned price!) but they have an elegance most other watches lack.
More important, consider the history of Patek Philippe and Rolex over the past
hundred years. They're probably the only brands that, in their own fashion,
have withstood the test of time, not to mention the quartz invasion, and have
emerged even stronger. Vacheron Constantin, IWC, Ulysse Nardin, Breitling,
Omega, and many other brands have had very rough patches, some have even
gone belly up -- thankfully they've survived, and most are thriving.
But my point is, whenever you see a Patek or Rolex on someone's wrist, you're
looking at watch history -- and you're looking at two brands that, in their own way,
have helped mold the watch world into what it is today. Let's show a little respect.
