Hi guys,

I've been mulling over getting another watch lately, and whenever I do, I keep returning to the SuperOcean Heritage. But, in these current times of doom and gloom, I'm not sure I could really justify the cost, and was thinking of getting something cheaper.

I'm thinking of less than £1000, it has to be big (40mm+) and nice and shiny :)

Basically, I'm looking for something to wear to give the Hercules a bit of a rest on occasion and want something that is not going to look hugely cheaper/less stylish than the Herc. I've seen the Oris F1 Chrono, but don't like the Williams branding.

Any help or suggestions would be welcome, or just point me in the direction of any decent shops/websites that you think might be able to help me.

Many thanks.

Well I can think of many watches, but it has to be your choice. If you go to www.prestigetime.com, their updated site allows you to look at watches by price. It's US$ based but will give you some idea and they have a pretty good selection. Of course they are grey market, so I'm not advocating buying from them, but a helpful selection tool. In terms of Oris, GBP1,000 should get you into quite a lot of their range.

I used to have an Oris TT3 Chrono (all Ti with bracelet), which was great value for money - but I don't think it has the pizazz of the Herc. Thing is, the Herc is twice maybe thrice the price at which you're trying to spend. So it would be hard to beat?

I'm not trying to beat the Hercules, just to get something half decent to wear some of the time to give the Herc some time off (and I'm getting the watch bug too).

This one looks nice, but would 47mm be just too big? I may well go for a wander this week and scout out some local shops.

No, I don't think it will be too big. My Carlos Coste has the same sized case and it doesn't wear large for 47mm. The measurement is taken where the case bulges out at the sides, so the bezel is actually smaller (around 44-45mm I think). I think you'll probably find it doesn't feel much larger than your Herc.

Anyhow, for that price range I think you're on the right track looking at Oris.

One thing to note - it is quite a deep case so it will probably sit quite prominently on your wrist. That bothers some people (not me though).
