dating from 1927. During WWII it of course made 2 register chronographs for the German Air Force. The company was restarted in West Germany in the early 1950's but instead of its own ebauches, Tutima began using Swiss.
The company took care of making the case and other parts. It was and still is located away from Glashutte, which is the home of German watchmaking, were the company had begun. Today it comprises a number of companies world wide all controlled by Tutima.
In 1985 Tutima submitted a watch for testing for use by the German armed forces. This watch had been specially designed for use by the German military. It was tested, accepted and has been the only watch since 1985 to be standard issue to the German Air Force and other NATO forces. The movement used is the incredible Lemania 5100 automatic. Much has been written about this incredible movement. Described by watchmakers as 'ugly' but superbly accurate and reliable. This movement has also become scarce as the SWATCH group( N. Hyak) cut back on its production except for Tutima, as far as I know.
Breitling used the Lemania 1871 and 1873 for period of approximately 10 years. I have a late model Navatimer Lemania 1871, dated from late in 1999. I just wanted to pass this information on Tutima and its great watches to those interested.

Al Pacino seems to be very fond of Tutima watches. Tutima had a special edition watch for the movie The Recruit which he wore, and now have a watch that is featured in his newest movie A Righteous Kill.

I never liked their designs though, their bracelets always looked cheap to me. They do have some models which look great on straps though.

As far as bracelets looking "cheap". I heard and read that comment 1000 times about Rolex and others. Tutima's bracelets, whether Titanium, stainless steel or SS and 18 K links are all solid and have been. Rolex for instance only started using solid gold links only a short time ago. It is particularly difficult to make titanium appealing to the eye due to its color. A very dull nothing in my opinion, yet it makes for a great solid bracelet when the links are solid rather than hollow.
As for Tutima's watch designs, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. That is purely subjective area where agreement could be difficult. I personally like their designs. I aught to, I own four different models with four different dial designs. For the most part Tutima makes rugged, practical tool watches, rather than haute horology eye candy.

IMO some of the Tutima bracelets are Gorgeous!

Quality of the titanium models like below SUPERB, also nice and light!

is one version of their NATO military model. As I type this I happen to be wearing one as pictured. Inside the titanium case beats the watch worlds' version of a Russian WWII T-34 tank. The Lemania 5100 movement. Just received my 2009 Wrist Watch annual and in checking through it I saw that only Tutima was shown with models using the L. 5100.
