The rules of formality are ridiculously outdated now, and I say that as someone who wears hats and knows when to wear it in an elevator and when to remove it in an elevator - in 2014 someone is more likely to be considered a fool if they stick rigidly to those rules that were considered essential for a gentleman not 100 years ago.

It may be sad, but even knowing the rules makes us anachronistic.
