Today I took in my Father's Omega Bumper Auto to have it serviced. It actually still works, but I finally want to get it serviced and actually start wearing it. I have always wanted a vintage watch, and now I can have one that really means something to me.

I always remember that the case emitted a kind of greenish hue. I always liked this watch. The case is about 33mm, but wears more like 34-36mm, I imagine because the bezel is so narrow. It has a nice wide lug width of 18mm, which I quite wide for the case. And, of course, lug holes! I am quite anxious to get a nice strap or perhaps a vintage looking bracelet for it.

Lovely rose gold movement. You should feel very pleased with wearing your Dads watch. Its very nice indeed.

I took it to Otto Friedl, in the lower Mezanine at the Fairmont Vanouver Hotel.

Had no idea there was a watch maker there.

Slight Hijack; why are they called "bumper"?

It's because of the automatic winding mechanism. Rather than have the weight free to rotate as in all automatics today, the weight was only allowed to swing between two stops. When the weight 'bump' into one of the stops you can feel it through the watch.

Otto Friedl has been in business since the 60s. Originally, when the gentleman himself started selling new Omega watches there. Now, I believe it's still family owned, and they do complete watch repair and restoration, as well as sales oftheir own line of new watches, and pre-owned watches. My Father bought Omegas from him in the 60s, and they are now servicing his "Bumper" for me. I don't think he would have got it there, though, as it is a 50s watch.

It's really worth a visit. They have some very nice pre-owned watches. They sold both my Cartier Tank and Rolex Explorer I for me. For some of the more popular watches, they have a waiting list for clients, and when they get a watch they will call them. That's how my Explorer I sold so fast.

They have an Omegas Flighmaster there now, and a beautiful 2011 Rolex "Kermit", a two-tone Submariner with a green bezel and the large dial like on the new models. And a previous model Breitling Colt Quartz with PRO II bracelet, which I was really tempted to get.

They do great restoration and repair work, and price very fairly. A couple of friends of mine have gone in there for very minor things, such as a WR test, and they didn't even charge them. And while you are there, you can look at the Omega Boutique upstairs in the main lobby. As well as Guchi and Louis Vuitton Boutiques, if you are so inclined.

Well said, Roff! A couple of years ago, when I discovered the watch, I actually thought there was something wrong with the movement. I didn't have a clue what a "bumper" is. The bumper was in a few other Manufacturers' watches as well, I have seen an Elgin for example on eBay. I don't know, though, if they all made their own movements.

Really looking forward to getting this watch and wearing it. I know that Otto Friedl does good work.
