Simple watch designs will always be well-replicated. I don't take that as a knock on the design. Without passing on the design of the SOII, simple often translates to beautiful or classic. And easily replicated. There are a s##t load of scary good Subs out there too.

Simple and classic can go hand in hand but this is clearly not the case for the SOII - It's not a design, IMO, that will stand the test of time.

There are plenty of scary-good fake subs out there but I think it's remarkable how well the SOII has been knocked off after only 2 years of it being on the market. The Submariner has been around for 50+ years and is enormously popular, so it stands to reason that there will be some pretty good replicas. I'm sure it took much longerthan 2 years to figure out how to make a spot-on fake!

I think you may have missed my disclaimer - "Without passing on the design of the SOII." (though I admit to liking the one with the black rehaut - it allows the dial itself to pop, whereas the ones with colored rehauts draw the eye away from the dial. And the dial is rather well done IMO. Put that dial in a SO Pro setup and I don't think many would be griping).

The thing about the Chinese fake market is how it has exploded in quality the last few years. It wasn't that long ago when almost everything was a "paper watch." But in the last decade they have upped the ante geometrically. These guys aren't bumbling idiots any longer. I have no doubt if the sub was JUST released tomorrow, there would be good fakes available within a year.

I didn't miss your preface Sharky, I was just stating my opinion. I feel this specific watch's design may be contributing to it's propensity to be thoroughly faked. The look and feel doesn't really exude luxury to me. It looks like a Fisher-Price watch and, as it turns out, the Chinese have learned how to blow-mold plastic into a Buck Rogers Bezel with remarkable accuracy.

I'd agree that the quality has increased significantly and the "time to knock-off" has deceased exponentially for all counterfeit goods coming out of Asia. The availability of technology to produce such goods used to be nonexistent over there, but more and more there is plenty of manufacturing capability to accomplish complex fakes.

The increased ability to create replicas/counterfeits of almost anything goes pretty much unhindered by the Chinese gov't., and the 'good' fakes will get more and more accurate, whatever the complexity. There are some very accurate AP ROO fakes which mimic the composite materials aswell as the offset register @ 12.

As demonstrated by Clarkson on Top Gear (China episode), you can buy a whole outfit & accessories faked to a high degree of accuracy, from a fake shop. Hell, you can even drive there in a Chinese branded Merc C Class clone.
