When I was in my AD today we were talking tourbillons. They asked me if I knew that there was a La Swiss branded tourbillon (La Swiss is a Canadian chain of watch stores and is the Breitling AD). I was amazed, didn't even realise that they had their own watches.

They then told me that they were only $2,200

I was genuinely confused - and then they told me....

They were chinese movements.

Why would anyone do that

Maybe they want to make toubillons for the people, like Volkswagen among watches

When I was a kid "Made in Japan" stamped on anything meant it was total rubbish. Today, Japan makes some of the best cars, electronics and even (quartz) watches in the world.

10 years ago, "Made in China" meant much the same but things are changing fast. On the watch front, the cheap, gold painted, brass Canal Street Rolexes and Breitlings have evolved into near 1:1 perfect replicas which only the WIS can spot. Since they can make good replicas, there's no reason why they can't also make good legitimate watches.

Within a few years, I believe Sea-gull Chinese movements will become a well respected and well recognised brand. Their ST-19 "Lemania" hand would movement is excellent and is a bargain compared to ETA. I see it as a natural development that the Chinese will produce movements for more up-market/expensive timepieces as they look to expand into more profitable markets. Producing a tourbillon may simply be to show they can do it rather than expecting high sales. I do, however, see it as a sign of things to come.

I purchased on of these watches form my favorite watch dealer. It has a Tourbillon movement. I was very excited to be able to afford this movement and the quality of the watch is good. Their website is KULTUHR.net some of their designs are a little out there but for me the price was right 1950.00US. I could not afford to purchase a Swiss Tourbillon so this is a way for me to own one. It is actually a pretty nice looking piece, fun to wear. Check it out,

I agree with Shark.

The Chinese are building it cheaper now, just wait until they are on the same level with the Japanese. We're all in trouble! It won't be long, especially since China is one of the fastest growing markets. The products they are producing now are getting much better.

Depends on how you define "better".

By "better" do you mean an broader range of poor copies of trade marked and copywritten products? Or maybe from pet food and tooth paste to now pharmaceutical drugs that kill? They used to produce poor quality steel, now they produce poor quality titanium.... are any of those improvements? Not to me.. but that is just my opinion, I could be wrong.
