I have done tons of both buying and selling on ebay, various high end audio sights and bicycle forums. But I have never purchased a used watch. I am trying to convince myself that when buying used the box/papers do not make that much of a difference but I just cannot. It seems to be a big deal to me and I can't figure out why.

So I run across a watch that I am interested in on TZ and it has all the boxes/papers, cool right? Then I read this

Code:
Warranty Card not completed

Watch is sold as used, not new. How/why would you end up with a watch and not have the AD fill things out? Still pretty new to the nicer watch thing, so do some ADs just give you all the junk and set you loose? Should I not be assuming this was purchased originally at an AD? Am needlessly worrying about something that is no big deal?

Guess the whole fake watch thing has me scared. Other things I buy/sell don't seem to be "faked". On a side note how often does the warranty come in to play anyway? If the watch is out of warranty the buyer is going to pay for any needed service tomorrow or years down the road. So is there any concern of buying a genuine watch that did not come from an AD and not being able to get it serviced, even if you are willing to pay for the service? If out of warranty how critical is it to have the watch serviced from the company it was created by? Seems like on a $3-7K watch (nothing crazy over the top) getting your watch worked on at a decent jewelry store should be like taking your car to a good service center and not taking to the dealer once warranty is over.

Thanks!

Direct Quote from Driver 8

"Well technically and by the letter of the (Breitling) law, it means the warranty isn't valid, and I've heard stories of Breitling asking for proof of purchase to accompany the warranty booklet when a watch goes in for warranty work. The reason for this is because some AD's like to "do the customer a favour" by leaving the date fields blank so the customer can fill them in at a later stage if needs be and thereby get warranty work when the watch is actually out of warranty. Breitling (obviously) frown upon this practice and can therefore refuse a warranty claim on a card that hasn't been correctly filled in.

That said, I've heard of some people having no issue at all with Breitling with non-fully completed cards.....

If you have one of these on a recently bought watch, I'd return to the originating AD and ask them to complete the card for you. If you bought it used, then you're kind of out of luck. Obviously there's nothing to stop you from filling it in yourself, but I wouldn't recommend that course of action.

Thanks for the quick reply. Guess I should have noted this is not a Breitling watch I was looking at. More of a general watch question overall. I can see the customer thinking they are getting a favor not having it filled out, but I would guess (don't really know) you might need your receipt for the actual warranty work.

Plus there has to be plenty of authentic, AD purchased, watches out there. I could easily see my wife or my parents throwing "that old junk" away in the form of boxes and papers. I'd be hard pressed to think a major watch company would want to piss off their customers by not servicing the watch they bought just because they are not all geeky like us and save the hang tag and bezel protector :P .

What would be the benefit of not working on a watch that is out of warranty other than to discourage people from buying a non AD watch? Should a warranty card not being filled out be any sort of indication for concern?

Also and nearly as importantly BUY THE SELLER. I have bought one or two watches from the B&S here and would not hesitate to purchase from those trusted sellers in the furture!

Good luck with the search!

Not a case of not working on it, not working on it for free.

The issue is that an undated warranty card can provide the opportunity for customers to abuse the warranty.

Is it an issue, not for me, I just ask when the watch was originally bought and value the warranty as whatever is remaining from that date.
