I was very surprised how little hands on work are done on panerai's, mostly machines. they had a episode with blancpain watches and they are pretty much all hands on, one watchmaker from start to finish. but then again Panerais are not Blancpain. Steve

Somebody I spoke to, who has the best watch collection ive seen (aside from that scammer in the government auction thread), including multiple Pateks, and has toured the Patek factory in Switzerland (on PP's dime) told me that machines do just about everything there, and that its a modern marvel to see what they are able to accomplish with them.

I can see why a watch like blancpain is well worth the money (hands on) whats so amazzing about puting a chunck of metal in a machine and out comes a watch, well several of the exact same thing??and yes i know there is a little more to it than that, but when you take the people out of it you no longer have a one of a kind timepiece, no two would ever be exactly the same. With a machine you can stap out 100's of the same exact thing. How would you like your watch made? For me i would like a watch to made by a watchmaker not a machine. Steve

So, does that mean you won't consider any brand that features machined watches? No Rolex, no Breitling, no Patek, no Panerai? I agree handmade watches are fantastic in principle, but there are many great watches out there that aren't handmade. Honestly, I don't care whether a Sub-C is handmade or machined. It's an awesome watch either way, and one I'd be very happy wearing. The same goes for an Explorer, a GMTII-C, a PAM 50, and any number of NLA Breitling models, to name just a few.

I already own watches that are made by machines, breitling, omegas and others. if im going to spend 8-13k on a watch i would by a blancpain just because of the work that goes in to it vs a watch that is made mostly by a machine! Look there is no right or wrong, IMO I would much rather have a watch with a lot of hands on work than one made by a bunch of steril machines.

Why did you hate them?? I can understand Rolex and even Panerai but not Blancpain, except that maybe it's not your style.

Some people have expressed a desire to retch at the bezel on this FF.

Personally, I rather like it, although perhaps not as much as the current sapphire bezel. Still, given it's on a 40mm case, it's a great fit for me. European Watch Company was selling one of these in mint condition last year for about $5-6k. It went fast, and I'm still kicking myself that I didn't grab it.

If they put a black and sapphire covered bezel on that one, I'd buy it tomorrow. Period! A year a go the FF Flyback was at the top of my list, but after trying one on, it was wearable, but really a bit big for me. An $18,000 watch has to fit like a glove.

I "settled" for the Breguet Type XXI which led to ... well anyone who has been here knows the story. I blame Blancpain entirely.

I feel the same way. At 45mm, it's just too big. If they made a 40mm with the sapphire bezel, it would rival, and perhaps beat, the Sub as my grail. Although, if they were charging $13k for it, I'm not sure I would like it $5k better than the Sub. Still, what a fantastic watch.

It does not wear like a 45 mm watch. Period. It wears about the same size as my former CSO did at 42mm. That's due to the short lugs. If the 45mm is a turn off then go try it on an you will see. I have small wrists and it fits great.

Pete, I initially hated the sapphire covered bezel and I thought 14k for a three hand no chrono glass covered bezel was ridiculous. That was until I tried it on and that was that. No regret with this watch...from the butter smooth sailcloth strap to the stealthy DLC finish to the gorgeous sapphire covered dial/bezel. My GMT is my all time favorite watch and it has sentimental value for me but the FF is knocking on the door. I can't say enough good things about the watch, just read Altair's review from last year....that says it all and more.

It's worth every penny to me.

Ive never seen this version before 40.5 mm with s.s. and rubber bracelet i hate the bracelet but put a nice strap on it and you have a winner. great price of $6,670 plus an extra 2% off. retails 11k plus.

I don't doubt it, and since I haven't tried it on, I won't argue as to how it fits; obviously I'd just be talking out of my ass. If I were looking to drop $13k, I'd go have a look, although where I don't know, since the nearest AD is in Northern California. (Even Seattle misses out...go figure.) But it's too rich for my blood. Besides, my threshold price is the Sub's MSRP. I've been lusting after that watch for a while now. Moreover, the Explorer is starting to "knock on the Sub's door," as you say, and it's going for $6.2k. Assuming I could get a discount of 10%, then I could get both the Sub and the Explorer for less than the list price of a FF on bracelet. And if I had both those watches, I'd be happier than a pig in slop. I don't see the thrill I'd get from a Blancpain equaling that, although I could be wrong.

Why the hell did I click on that link....I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.

SubC retails right around $8k and Discounts arent so easy to come by. 15% would be very nice. If you want a pre-loved subC PM devious3g. He has one that's a month or so old and may consider a sale.

Blancpain will set you back $13,800 and I know you can get a nice discount on it....bringing it very close to the retail price of a SubC. I love the SubC, the only reason I don't own one is because I have a GMTc.

The Sub and FF are neck and neck IMO. Im gonna go out on a limb and say....post discount...a FF SS will cost about $2500-$2800 more than a SubC. (that's with two aggressive discounts). The FF is far less common, has a 5 day power reserve, super comfortable sailcloth strap, and a killer lume. The SubC is also an awesome watch. Either way they're both winners.

I certainly can't argue with that.
