ok guys its obvious that on a full wind that a watches power reserve is what the manufacturer says it will be. my question is this....if you wind a watch up adjust the time but dont push the crown back in will the reserve run out or does the reserve start as soon as the watch starts??

stupid question im sure but just curious

Pulling the crown out stops the running train and preserves the power reserve.

While on the topic of power reserve, is it solely the length of the mainspring that determines the amount of power reserve, or are there other factors at play (for example, the rate at which the mainspring unwinds)?

It's length and strength (not quite the same as rate), but some high power reserve watches have multiple mainspring barrels (and hence mainsprings) as well.
