Skagan is another brand that she could consider

I'm aware of Skagan. I didn't recomment them, 'cause I don't much care for them personally. :)

I had a beautiful Skagan a few years ago... the crystal broke about two months after I got it. Nice designs, but I don't think they're very durable.

What she should really do is give him $200. I only say this because to me watches are a pretty personal thing, even for the non-WIS that's not really into watches. My wife gave me a nice $200 watch a couple of years ago for Christmas, and as much as I wanted to like it I didn't, so I returned it and got one that I liked better. She didn't mind, but I felt bad about returning it.

Yep, I'd go for Seiko. I've had a Seiko divers for 20 yrs now. Its an auto that's never been serviced and has taken a pounding and is still as accurate as the day i bought it.

We've got "Buy him something used" and now "Give him cash." Maybe gift giving is not this forum's specialty. I think a gift receipt will do it.

I will admit that I suck at picking out gifts. The only reason I said that is that it really sucks when you open a gift from a loved one and don't like it. Then you have to pretend to like it, which can be pretty hard, but I do know that giving cash isn't very personal.

I've bought girls watches as gifts. They think it's sweet, though I don't let them know that the brand of watch indicates how serious I am about the relationship, going from ESQ Swiss, to Movado, to Tag Heuer. Haven't gotten a girl anything nicer than that, and I've never been married. I'm sure those facts are related.

Well...cash is the ultimate universal gift, never needs to be returned, it always fits, and puts a smile on everyone's face. BUT it is very impersonal and shouldn't be given to a girlfriend or boyfriend. I wouldn't go used either...if someone gave me a used item as a gift I would be pissed...unless it was an antique item; that's different.

What about a g-shock or one of those garmin heart rate monitor gps watches if he's a runner or work-out-aholic?

OK, forget the cash thing, I don't ever give cash either unless it's for a wedding, mainly because when I got married that's all I wanted, screw a blender or decanters or whatever the hell else I got and never used. I was just saying that a watch is a tough gift to pick out for a guy. It's pretty much the only accessory that we have as opposed to women who have jewelry and purses and whatnot.

Yea, that's where I was going. The monster is such a great watch for the money. Plus they are pretty easy to find.

At $210 you can get a Christopher Ward C5 Malvern. Swiss made (albeit quartz) with a 5 year guarantee and great style. I have the automatic version and it is very nice. Much nicer than you would think from the price.

And it has the advantage of being brand new in a very impressive box.

I'd go with a Nixon... Good looking watch, swiss quartz, but the price is a bit more than $200...

In that range you are obviously not going to get a high-end watch. For $200 i would look at more of a fashion watch (michael Kors) or perhaps something useful like a casio g-shock.

i second the G shock. I love these watches. they are great for any condition wear.
