Good discussion this!

I am definitely sticking by the X-factor being a requirement. To me it's the X-factor alone that propels a watch from being "merely" excellent to being truly great. I personally could not call something great if I didn't actually like it aesthetically, irrespective of the technical achievements that went into it. For me a technically flawless watch is a excellent watch. A technically flawless watch that I also really like is a truly great watch.

Altair,

To paraphrase that old chestnut, "Me thinks you protest (your own greatness) too much." In my feeble opinion, your collection houses enough truly "great" watches to make anyone envious. I know I am. :) But by all means, keep searching for that one truly great timepiece. I can't imagine what it will be.

I think it could, but then also you could find some watches that were very limited like say the Rolex Mickey Mouse watch. A bit exclusive I guess but I wouldnt say "great watch." Sometimes companies just make a watch in low numbers because they want to add a premium on to the price. Nothing in terms of complications is added to the watch just a higher pricetag.

Make sense?

for sure....does make alot of sense. i guess meeting the 5 categories provided by Altair plus throwing in the exclusivity...should make for a great watch.

Rolex mickey mouse sounds weird. lol

That is not a rare reaction, as I said in my original post, a fashion watch might be desirable but that does not make it great. being owned by you or someone else and envied by others is not criteria for greatness either.
