Except that Panerai makes about 30,000 watches per year and rolex makes a million. Last time I was in an AD that had both, they have about 10 Panerai and abolut 50 Rolex.

About the car analogy, I´ve met people with Porsches that knew it´s a 911 (duh), but Carrera, Turbo, RS etc... No clue. My colleague bought a new BMW 3-series coupe. I said that his 335 is a nice piece of machinery, double turbos, three litre, six cylinders. His response: really? i just bought it because i liked the look, how it drives, how smooth the auto was and the high quality of the leather. Everything he was intrested in, was how the product makes him feel.

When you have enough money, people tend to buy nice things just because they like them. Not caring of "pointless" details like model names, engine capacity, inhouse movements, etc.

IMHO buying any product for how it makes you feel, is the single best reason to buy something. Other reasons come after that. understanding the product is just added value. The more you understand it the more value is added.

After reading that and a few other comments, and understanding that most people on these forums have some class, these remarks still confuse me.

I have an interest and an appreciation for the finer things - I love my BlackBird and I've got a PAM 321 on the way - and I'm on a list for a PAM 358. That being said, I LOVE watches - however, while I'm somewhat familiar with the different movements and what differentiates one watchmaker from the next, I personally would not want to get into a conversation with a random stranger about my timepiece. I used to own a rare cafe motorcycle and people would want to talk about it, but I tended to shy away.

You can have an appreciation for certain things and not feel the need to share that appreciation with others. I personally wouldn't be rude, but I'd most likely try to end the conversation quickly if I was in public......unless of course you were female with auburn hair and big, beautiful eyes and smelled pretty - then I'd probably have a change of heart and ask if you'd like to discuss my watch over a cocktail

As it was my post you quoted there I should probably clarify what I meant by that. When I said about people taking an interest in what they buy, I don't mean taking an interest so they can talk to random strangers about it. As I said in the rest of my post I don't start conversations with people I don't know in the street. No, I meant the buyer taking more of an interest on a personal level just so they actually have a clue what they spent their money on!

Personally I tend not to buy anything expensive without doing at least a little research, but that's just me. I'm not knocking anyone here as we all have our own reasons for buying things, but I am sometimes amazed when people ask questions like, "I didn't wear my brand new Super Avenger for a week and now it's stopped. Has the battery run out?".

I just struggle to get to grips with how anyone can spend several thousand pounds/dollars on something without knowing a single thing about what it is and how it works. But as I say, that's just me........

I feel the same way, especially because it's a piece of art. It's like buying a painting or sculpture for thousands of dollars, and not knowing who made the thing. It's cheaper just to buy a T-shirt that says "Philistine."

Just yesterday I saw a guy on the subway wearing two-tone Breitling Chronomat (I think he had a Windrider).

I happened to wear very similar Chronomat (Longitude) and as I was standing next to him - I wanted to ask about the watch, but never did. Somehow I don't feel comfortable approaching strangers with watch questions. :wowzers

I agree with this and can cite an example. My business partner has a Bentley 6.75. He had no idea it was a 6.75 when I asked what model it was before I know anything about Breitlings. He just bought it because he thought it would be cool to have a Bentley "watch" to go with the Bentley GT (car) he owned. Heck, he didn't even realize he could adjust the date on the watch without passing midnight several times to find the date he wanted. He just isn't a guy that pays much attention to those types of details.

Me, well I just got my first Breitling and I've already had the waiter at the Cheesecake Factory practically scream across the isle at me about my Breitling. He almost made a scene in the restaurant....but I was happy to show it to him and talk about it.
