Sounds like a weird question, but today my wife and I are having a garage sale and I had a couple of older quartz watches out there for sale... This guy comes up , starts looking at them, pulls out a loop and examining the crystal and then....
Out comes his tongue!!! He licks the crystal and proceeds to tell the guy next to him "it's a good crystal".
First time for me to see this...
Any of you guys value your watches by taste ?

Funny thing is the other guy who he talked to (my neighbor which he didn't know, bought the watch) ...after it was "tasted"

It tells me that you live in a weird neighbourhood

Seriously, I've never heard of it - maybe trying to find a crack, but I would have thought fingers would be just as good (or eyes!).

the only way I can immagine that you could "taste" something as hard as a crystal is if you have extremely sensitive tastebuds as well as extremely acidic saliva, kinda alien grade...... are you sure he wasnt from another planet.....

you know this is kinda weird however maybe its something like this....if you take a fake pearl and rub it against your teeth its completely smooth, but if you take a real pearl and rub it against your teeth no matter how "fine" of grade it is or the brand or how much u paid for it it has a very little bit of a grittyness (sp?)(even a word?). Just so you know my gf had "tested" the past two pieces of jewelry I have bought her with pearls in them. So a little word to the wise DONT SHOW THIS TO YOUR LADY FRIENDS! I forget how I found this out but did anyone else know this?

I think I knew this :) a Pearl "grows" naturally, layer by layer, almost like a tree grows and becomes thicker and thicker. Thats why you can feel the layers. Also you will find very few pearls that are really perfectly round. If you roll one on a flat surface youll notice that its not perfect. A fake pearl is made of plastic or glass and is formed in one piece so it is going to be perfectly round and you wont feel the same "grittyness" with your teeth.

Same thing doesnt apply to crystalls. A crystall is a hardened piece of glass, it is not naturally grown, and it is going to be perfect in every way (if its on a watch), so you can hardly taste anything. Let alone tasting if its a good or a bad crystal. At the most you can taste the doodle of the fly that sat on it........

Mineral crystals are hardened glass, sapphire crystals aren't - they are artificially produced (usually via the Vermeuil process, but not always) but have the same chemical composition as natural sapphires / rubies.

I would have told him "you lick it, you bought it". Especially in swine flu season.

I know that when I lick "real" crystal on a watch, I can see the future - it doesn't seem odd at all assuming he has the same ability.
