This past fall, Breitling issued a very special limited edition of the Navitimer 01 in honor of WWII Veterans – the Greatest Generation. In particular, this piece is part of Breitling’s effort to support the Honor Flight Network – an organization committed to the mission of honoring WWII veterans by flying them to Washington, D.C. (at no expense) so that they are able to visit the WWII Memorial there. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this limited edition will go to support this incredibly worthy cause.

The WWII Memorial features 56 pillars – one for each of the states and U.S. territories as they existed during the war. The Honor Flight Navitimer is limited to 56 pieces – the case back of each is engraved with one of the 56 pillars, thus making each piece unique. The raised logo of the Honor Flight Network appears at the top of the blue dial, replacing the standard Breitling logo.

My own father served on a destroyer in the South Pacific during WWII, and it was berthed in Pearl Harbor before setting sail for Tarawa and other engagements. Some years ago, my sister and I took my father back to Hawaii on our own “Honor Flight” to visit Pearl Harbor, Punchbowl National Cemetery and other places from my father’s time in the Navy. So, it was especially meaningful to me that the “Hawaii” edition of the Navitimer was still available, as it brings back a great memory of that trip with my father to honor his service.

Included with the Navitimer were a couple of other related items – a copy of the DVD “Honor Flight – One Last Mission”, as well as a commemorative coin. The film tells an incredibly moving story, and I can’t recommend it highly enough. Kudos to Breitling for their involvement with the Honor Flight Network, and kudos to the Honor Flight Network itself for engaging in such an extraordinary effort to honor WWII Veterans.

Breitling also included a "gold" leather strap and deployant in addition to the Navitimer bracelet.

A beautiful piece and a great gesture by Breitling.

My dad served in the South Pacific as well, on an Escort Carrier. He might have been interested in seeing the memorial, though he wanted no part of Hawaii or the South Pacific again. He said very little about the war afterwards, other than the fact that out of his division of 180 men, there was no reunion as very few survived. Not long before he passed, however, my brother twisted his arm a bit and we stopped in a museum to see one of the few torpedo bombers like his which still was in flying condition. He actually enjoyed it. Part of the greatness of the "greatest generation" was their modest and unassuming nature.

I do hope the "State of Iowa" (Dad's home and where he rests) piece is in good hands.
