From a run to a dirt airstrip in Afghanistan yesterday. I am LOVING the Airwolf for flying and doing long mission trips around the world, with its various functions. I'm leaving the primary time at my home location, so at any point I can see on the analog hands what time it is back home. Then I'm leaving the digital display on Time 2, set to my local time where I'm travelling at, or flying out of. And then as I've mentioned before, I leave my Co-Pilot set on UTC ("Zulu") time, which is the standard for flight operations, and our mission times that we go off of as we do world travels. Three different time zones displayed and used simultaneously, plus all the other functions.

One guy on my crew thinks I'm crazy to wear the 'Ling in the jet, but that's exactly why I bought it. It's holding up well so far, other than a ton of surface scratches (all superficial) on the clasp underneath. I just try to be careful if I help push cargo around in the back.

Great Pics Chris! As a person who flies frequently to the middle east I am a very strong supporter for you guys out there. My company builds custom armored vehicles for the US govt and currently have many vehicles at Bagram. Next Time i head out to Dubai ---> Baghdad ill try to snap a few photos on the AN-12 we usually fly in on.

Okay, I thought I could do a bit better and re-took some more pictures, trying to get the watch better displayed and in focus on some. I also realized my Heads-Up Display was put down in the previous "hero shot". This is another airfield in Afghanistan.

Thanks, I'm a lot happier with the newer pics, especially the close-ups with the cockpit fuzzy in the background. I do wish that the Co-Pilot module was readable more from off-axis. It just doesn't photograph the display unless you're taking a pic more directly of it's face, in which case the Airwolf watch face is quite turned away on the wrist, and doesn't look very good in the photo. Same thing with reading the Co-pilot. If you're looking at the watch on your wrist, you have to rotate your wrist to read the Co-Pilot. Oh, well.

I would seriously give my left nut to get a couple of hours flying that bad boy! How much hands on flying do you guys get to do? The biggest problem with the airlines is that you don't actually do much flying anymore!

Nice watch by the way, the co-pilot really suits the dark face of the airwolf. A couple of shots against the sky might be nice, it's a nice view from FL350. 8)

Those are the best pics of the 'wolf I've ever seen. Great to see it in action were it's been designed for! I'll not bore you with pics of my B-1 in a PA-28 or C152!

I got a good close up look at the C-17 @ RAF Fairford on Saturday. It's a monster! :shock:

Whizzler, re: your question, yes, in airlift a lot of flying time is spent at high altitude travelling. Not all time, though--for example our low level operations (300 ft above ground, 300-400 mph) and mid-air refueling is pretty exciting. It is up to each pilot to challenge their flying skills constantly, which age and rust. Thus, I often deliberately turn the autopilot off and hand-fly approaches, climbs, departures, etc.

You wanted some pics from altitude. I think these are Iraq and Afghanistan--not very interesting, in my opinion. There's not much to see, and so much is mono-chromatic.

And another through our Heads-Up Display. These are really tough to take good pictures of, with refresh rate flicker, much like videotaping a computer monitor.

So might as well try to get one with the Airwolf in it. This is even harder, as the outside world is very backlit, so you have to use a flash, which reflects, especially off the HUD, which is multiple panes of glass. I only got one pic to turn out even half-way decent.

Okay, and a pic of the sunset over the Indian Ocean prior to the last pic. I really dig sunsets from high altitude.

Contrast those boring brown desert pictures, though, with ones I shot while transiting Alaska a few weeks ago of Mt. Redoubt, the volcano which continues to erupt near Anchorage. Here, those brown mountain sides are actually not sand or even dirt, but rather volcanic ash sitting on top of the snow.

Thats insane! :shock: i didn't even pick up on that! seriously, thats gotta mess with you on a conversion to the type!!

thanks for the extra pics, the HUD pics are especially interesting, something i wish they would bring across to more aircraft.

Huh... I assume you mean the speed tape on the left side of my HUD/PFD (Primary Flight Display). Note that the HUD is a mono-chromatic version of the PFD, which is one of many options that can be displayed on any one of our four MFD's on the instrument panel. (Multi-Function Displays) It comes from the bottom as you build speed, which seems intuitive.

The C-17 is the first airplane that I've flown with a PFD. Before, I've only had airspeed dials.
