I picked up my Avenger Seawolf today. I could barely sleep last night. I bought it used from a fellow that had it for 2 years, it has a very small scratch on the upper strap area and a slight scratch on the buckle that will probably buff out. I got it authenticated and checked at a local Breitling repair store so I knew it was in good shape. I talk the guy down from $2000 to $1800. I'm so pumped!! A couple questions though:

1) What is the knob looking thing that sits flush against the watch, it's opposite the crown. is that the relief valve for stored gas?
2) Is the case titanium? I've been reading from different sources that say stainless steel, then titanium. Breitling.com just says "steel" so that could go either way. Was titanium just an option?

The feature you are referring to is a helium release valve. The notion that there is some kind of gas in the watch is something I've heard a couple times from guys with Omega Seamasters which have a manual relase valve. I think it's because they are told it's a "gas valve" and "never open it." The only gas in your watch is oxygen.

From Wikipedia on how and why on helium release valves (as a pratical matter it is quite irrelevant) -

Quote:
"A helium release valve, or helium escape valve, as it is also called, is a feature found on some diving watches. It provides functionality for professional divers operating at great depths for prolonged periods of time or under saturation.

When commercial divers operate at great depths, they often spend prolonged hours in diving bells under pressure breathing a breathing gas mix like trimix or similar, that contain the gases helium or hydrogen. Since helium atoms are the smallest natural gas particles found in nature, these gas atoms are able to work their way inside the watch, around any o-rings or other seals the watch may feature. This is not a problem as long as the divers stay under pressure, but when the decompression stops during resurfacing aren't long enough, a pressure difference builds up between the trapped gas(es) inside the watch case and its environment. Depending on the construction of the watch case and crystal, this effect can cause damage to the watch, like making the crystal pop off."

Seawolf's have been made in both titanium and Stainless Steel. Yours looks SS and the weight is a pretty good sign. The model # is on the back of the watch and if it starts with a "A" the watch is SS.

Congrats on your first Breitling and welcome.

Hope you enjoy your new watch, I've owned two Seawolves and still one of my favorites.

Yours is SS. I don't believe the E17370 model Seawolf was available with the newer dial.

Ok I figured it was SS anyways, it's a pig. This model is A17330, does that mean it has the older or newer dial?

Also, I was wondering if this watch has to be babied at all, because I fully plan on wearing it day to day. it's not sitting in a glass case. Are there certain things day to day that would give it excess stress that I should take it off for? I fully intend on caring for it, I'm obviously not going to abuse it in any way.

A=SS
17= movement type - caliber B17
3= COSC certified chronometer
30 = particular model

On the warranty book there is a / followed by letter and #s that supposedly have to do with dial color and style.

You don't need to baby it. But it does have a relatively delicate mechanical movment like any other mechanical watch. Most would recommend not golfing with it on for example. Some disagree.

I can say that the Seawolf is about as tough of a mechanical watch as you can get. That thing is a tank.

Congrats on your pickup! Wear it with pride
