A couple of weeks ago I took a watch making course where I got to take apart and put two watches back together. Great fun, lots of work and best of all I got to take the watches back home with me :)

Excellent - whose course was it?

Surprised that they gave you an automatic to start with rather than a manual.

Now be honest, how long did it take you to get the running train set properly between the plates the first time? :lol:

Do you need any experience at all to take these classes? I need a hobby, may be fun to try.

It was at the Schaumburger watch close to Hannover Germany. It was actually a two day course, the first day was a handwind and the second automatic. I spent the first 1.5 hours to take it apart and the rest of the day to put it all back together. It was hard work but well worth it.

What do you mean by the running train? Is that the spring that holds the charge? If yes then that was the only part we left intact. The Teacher himself only took it apart and put it back together in maybe 10 mins to show us how it looks like.

Not at all, its a starter/beginner course anyone can take part, I would recommend it to anyone interested :)

No that's the mainspring and mainspring barrel. Actually fairly easy to take apart and not much harder to put together as long as you have a mainspring winder.

Running train is the series of arbors and wheels that connect the mainspring barrel to the escapement and it is always what frustrates me. Standing the arbors in the jewels on the base plate is tough enough without them falling, especially as you start adding more arbors / wheels and engaging the teeth but the hardest part for me is putting the bridges / top plate on without disturbing the arbors - generally I'll get all of the way through to the escape wheel and then watch as one shifts and knocks them all over :evil:

Ahhhhhh yes, that ofcourse took most of the day to get right :oops: but the first day was harder for some reason, maybe I learnt something for the next day. But I have to say it was such an awsome feeling when the balance wheel finally fits into place and all by itself just starts ticking and the watch is "alive"....... I think everyone in the room heard my aw of joy at that moment :oops:
