Hello, and thank you for the information on this site.

A few years ago, I bought this smaller chronograph watch from a friend of a friend who was leaving town. It looked like an old Breitling, and all functions worked, so I paid him $450 and didn’t think much about it.

I am not too experienced with high end watches, I find Seiko dive watches to be less nerve wracking to wear and less prone to damage from hitting things and being in water. Something about the price point as well.

In any event, I pulled the watch out last week and have been wearing it. It keeps good time and I like the look of it.

But: is it real? what the heck is it? how old might it be?

Any help would be most appreciated.

Here it is:

Watch is not real unfortunately. As a starter for you, the number 178 on the back would normally be the reference number. If you google “Breitling ref 178” you’ll see your watch isn’t correct. Lots of other stuff wrong too.

Thanks, I see what you mean about the 178 issue—-what are the other issues?

got it. Basically everything. Well, the guy needed the money more than I did, I guess.

Thanks for your help. As I can't abide a fake, into the trash it goes so that someone years from now doesn't get fooled.

You could, if you wanted to be so principled, just sell the landeron 48 movement. Someone will make use of it.

That's is an idea I hadn't thought of----how/where would I sell the movement? What would be a reasonable price to a buyer?

Thanks
