Post subject: | First Post - can you please help me identify these Premiers |
Hi there, I have had an eye on vintage Breitling Premier watches for a while now but could not really afford any of them. With a new job and an upcoming Christmas bonus, I think I can finally make it. This is my first post here, so please bear with me. I found this interesting interview online https://www.fratellowatches.com/vintage ... nterviews/ and it says there, that I should come here in order to prevent me from buying fake watches. So, that's what I am doing now. In case I am missing something - regarding forum rules etc - please point me in the right direction! I know its a lot to ask, but I thought I might try my luck here. Thank you so much in advance! So: Watch #1: https://www.ebay.de/itm/Breitling-Vinta ... 1438.l2649 Watch #2 (you can't really see lots on the pictures, but maybe you have something to say anyways): https://www.ebay.de/itm/Breitling-178-V ... 1438.l2649 Watch#3: https://www.ebay.de/itm/BREITLING-Premi ... 1438.l2649 Watch #4: https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de/s-anz ... -156-16350 Greetings from Germany! welcome, Max! #1 fione, but not a Premier; price on the high side #2 again no Premier, but looks good, excellent price! #3 is a Premier & correct, medicore/poor dial condition fairly reflected in asking price #4 is a 797, not 707, fine too |

Hi there - thanks for the very quick reply. So what exactly is watch #2? Can you tell from a distance? Very very helpful already! |

Hi, thanks Dave (I guess) - so in regards to originality and quality and considering the price it would be a "go" for you? Sorry, I don't really want you to decide on my purchase, but I would like to have your thoughts on it. Thanks again - again: really helpful. Great forum indeed. |

If I needed another up/down Venus 170 I would buy it even w that crappy picture. Risk is it needs a service though so caveat emptor ![]() |

Hi again - so I did actually purchase #2. Arrived yesterday. Just a few questions about this watch: I don't have the feeling of something "solid", I weighted the watch with wristbands and buckle and it only weights 40 gramm. I weighted my Revue Thomes (which shouldn't really be comparable in terms of quality) and it weights about 55g. The "glass" doesn't seem to be glass and the overall feeling of the case is not really good, it is definitely not steel. I just wanted to ask if this (especially the light weight) is normal, or if I did indeed get a fake watch in the end? I will post some pictures tonight, but wanted to have you general thoughts anyways. Will open the case as well. Thanks a bunch in advance - again! Best - Max |

Max, the ref. 178 was part of the "affordable" (advertised as such in the 1940s) entry-level range & it is indeed a chromed case. no, it isn't fake. |

Hi Fred (I guess)! Thanks for the hint. Nothing bad about the watch I was just "shocked" how light it was. Are the Premiers any different though? I will have the watch checked and cleaned by my repairs-guy and keep you guys updated - if you want. Best - Max |

Hi again - thanks a lot for your last responses. I have been wearing this ref. 178 over the last weeks and I am very happy with the "performance" and looks of it. The only thing that is kind of bothering me is the case (chrome) and the glass (not being glass). Is there any option to use a different (maybe premier model) case and put the rest of the watch in there? I know that I would be changing something original into something "new", but I would really prefer steel to chrome. Do you guys know if cases can be purchased somewhere (like here for example?). Or does anyone of you want my ref. 178? I don't know if I am allowed to sell here, so I don't really make an offer, but if you are interested just let me know. I'd sell it for the price I bought it. Best Max |

you can post it for sale in the "for sale" section. i dont think anyone here would really suggest you pursue any efforts to recase the watch, so not really going to go into a discussion of that. |

and note that all Breitling from the 1930s to the 1970s had acrylic crystals, just like any other relevant watch. |
