This is my first post, and I would first of all like to apologise for shamelessly leeching on your knowledge. This is my old Breitling which was my constant companion for about 15 years until it took a nasty fall due to a broken strap. Now many years later I´m thinking about restoring the watch to its former glory, but first I would like to know a little about it. I picked it up around 1987 in a workshop where I used to work. It was used to time piecework, but as they had gotten a shiny new stopwatch they did not need it any more and gave it to me. Now I wonder if you can help me with determining its age, the serial number table I found says 1945, but I think that seems far too old. I have gotten an estimate on about 800-100 US$ for restoring the watch, is this a fair sum for this watch or will I throw good money on a sub par watch? |

IMO 800-1000 is 'a bit' much for a general service (which it seems to be , plexi's are service items and fitting the small hand after service needs to be done anyway) If I would send something like that in for service I'd expect to pay 300-500 , which the watch is definitely worth if you ask me |

Case looks authentic/original, but the dial looks like a potential old refinish job (perhaps done in the late 1950's?). The register numbers are a little inconsistent, and the overall style looks more like a mid/late 1950's Breitling. Thoughts? |

dial design, logo & hands are correct for very late 1040s or early 1950s assembly; case is mid 1940s. not unusual at all, Breitling used up case stocks over years; have an even later 788 in a mid 1940s case. a better pic would tell us more if it's a redial, print isn't too crisp. |

Thank you for your replies! I will try to post a better picture of the dial when I get home from work. I had huge trouble to get pictures to fit the requirements for posting here, file size and pixel width and height, do you have any helpful tips on picture posting? |

try uploading to an image hosting site, like postimage.org, and putting the links to the images in the forum post |

Thank you for all the help. Here is a link to a picture that is somewhat better, I do not know why but I have always been crap at taking pictures of watches. Anyway here goes: ![]() |

hard to judge, but probably factory original; font is correct, the missing "crispness" might be a focus issue. dial produced 1947/8 to early 1953 |
